Wonder if that was the same episode where they went up to Whidby Island. It was a great show. They visited a guy with a ton of steam engine memoribilia. Also bought a drag saw from another guy. I think American pickers is ok. But thought this show was great. If its the same 1. Didnt have the short fat guy in it. Had the other guys brother. Obviously I suck at names. The show was well worth watching.

I have a hard time with these guys, seems to me they use the cameras and hoopla to pressure these older folks to selling their wares.

On the other hand, it'd probably just rust away in the barn and some grandkids would pawn it off for nothing, or it'd go up for a farm auction and slip under the radar and sell for nothing or go to the dump.

Anyone notice they seem to target older folks that don't have support of their children?  Kinda left out in the weeds to get old and die.

It should make you realize that something is worth what people are willing to pay... Kinda like pawn stars... If its worth 10K  its only worth 4-5K right now if you wait for a the right person it may be worth 15k..... just because that antique vase is worth $200 doesn't mean anyone will give it to you that lives near by.  :twocents:

Ask your boss how the "picked" people feel about all of it?  They still happy or they pissed off?
I haven't heard from previously "picked" people  :dunno:

I admit it i watch american pickers every week thanks to my DVR. These guys have to make money too and they  OFTEN tell sellers they are not asking enough and offer them substantially more than the sellers initial asking price. You have to realize they are buyinh a lot of items for less than $100 and try to make 35-50% and it takes a lot of those items to pay their overhead and make a buck. Yeah the History Channel pays them too but the teal con artists are the goof balls on Pawn Stars

I have a hard time considering someone a victim when they just converted something that's been sitting in the back of a stuffed barn for the past 25 years into cash.  :twocents:

It seems people always have the intention of making a lot of money off their stuff, but never do anything about it.

Talked to my dad in Montana last night & he said they came through his town, not sure what crew it was. They went to a few of his friend's barns & such. Offered $2k for some old boots, chaps, & spurs & the guy turned it down.  :dunno:

On the Whidby Is. show, they were also at Crosby (find that on your map), that's where they had to saw off for the drag saw. Not sure where the guy with the steam tractor is located.

How about that bear trap that they bought from the guy in Winthrop?  The seller said he wanted $700 for it and Mike went and called a buddy of his to find out if it was worth it.  His buddy tells him it's worth $4,000 - $6,000 and Mike goes back in and tells the seller the news.  I think they ended up settling on $4,500 or something.
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

One mans junk is another mans treasure? Hard to say they're taking advantage of anyone. The folks who have the crap don't have a way or, a market to sell the items. They probably don't do Ebay and if they do, they know what their chit is worth.

Here's a good article from the guy they picked in Ridgefield, I read this in the reflector paper at work yesterday

http://www.thereflector.com/home_scene/article_b8b81850-43bd-11e2-88be-0019bb2963f4.html

I love what he says about the 'gophers' toward the end of the interview

Could have been "Ghost Town Gold", another picker type show
