458 socom
« on: April 02, 2014, 11:25:03 PM »
I'm thinking of another AR build and I have been wanting to play with the 458 socom for some time now.

has anyone built one before?

Some questions I have are:
1.  What modifications are needed to a standard upper?  I know it needs a different bolt, are there other mods needed, and if so are they difficult?
2.  Where does one find parts?  (ie barrels, bolts, etc)
3.  Do standard mags/followers work?

any insights or lessons learned are appreciated!

My research thus far seems to indicate the need for a custom bolt (no surprise) and a need to mill out the ejection port on the upper a little to allow for easier ejection of spent cases.

I am hearing that std. mags work fine.

Should be a fun project-I still welcome any lessons learned folks may have on this topic

I bought a Rock River complete upper a couple of years back.
Put it on a standard lower and used standard mags, no problems, other than finding ammo and the cost of said ammo.
Definitely a reloaders gun.

Very nice!

I am looking forward to it.  I just went on the waiting list for a barrel.  I figure that will take a good 9-12 months to get through which will give me a ton of time to collect all the other parts I want...

Hey! I'm not a complete idiot I have parts missing. Though sometimes I wonder.

Looks great!

I am getting a Wilson Combat barrel on it.  1:14 twist, 16 inch.

I've never been an AR guy, but this caliber has almost convinced me to try again.

1. You need a new barrel and bolt. You need to mill of 0.020" off the top of the ejection port and 0.095" off the bottom of the ejection port.

2. Wilson Combat and RRA sell complete uppers. (get in line for a 12 month wait). Wilson also sells barrel/bolt kits. Other sell barrels and bolts. Black Hole Weaponry and Tactical Ammunition come to mind. I'm sure there are other.

3. Standard 5.56mm (metal or pmags) unmodified magazine and followers work.

I don't have one myself, but I'm building one presently. I have everything except the barrel, which I ordered from Tactical Ammunition back in January. It's supposed to be delivered at the end of April 2014 (ordered January 2014).

Did you order it as the "Build kit" or just the barrel? That's a great package. Do you know how far they are out on delivery?

I emailed them and said, "Can you give me a no BS ETA if I order the kit today. They emailed back, "No BS, you're looking at 12 months".

Yeah, I agree, many don't. What turned me off from Wilson was, they charge your card when you order.

I ended up ordering a Black Hole Weaponry .458 barrel from Tactical Ammunition in January, supposed to get it end of April. There's been some issues, so it'll probably drag on... But they don't charge your card till your item ships.

I forgot to add, that i sent the email to Wilson back in January 2014.

I suppose BHW told you it would ship in 6-8 weeks.  The last barrel I ordered from them was 8 MONTHS!  And it would have been longer than that if I hadn't sent them a nasty email saying how ridiculous it was to wait 8 months, after I was told it would ship in 6-8 weeks.  And they charged my credit card the day I ordered.  :dunno:
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Bernie Madoff did it, it's called a "Ponzi Scheme"
When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"
