Boy that is really depressing report.  When I had my bull tag there in 08 it was a fantastic hunt and finding moose was not a problem at all.

One of my co-workers has a bull tag.  I'm sure he wouldn't mind a little extra info.  Feel free to shoot me a PM.

That is your problem right there....you are walking too much.  I just sat watching openings all day and they eventually popped out.   I hunted from Starr Rd.

I was with him and we did hunt very hard. I got a Cow there in 2011 and it was incredible. Saw 24 bulls and 6 cows. BUt we were there last year and saw 4 moose total. A mile away from us each time. I know the guy that takes care of the roads and tower area on Mica and he said its not the same as it was. He use to see moose every day. Last year he had gone weeks without seeing moose. Sorry for the downer info but there are still moose there I am sure. Its just not as much of a opportunity provider as it use to be.
I wish you the best of luck. PM me and If you have any questions.

I agree with deerhuntr.  Get up high on the mountain, pick a big cut and sit and watch it.  There are moose there and they will show themselves eventually, it is just a matter of time.  I filled my cow tag there a couple weeks ago.  Was watching a clear cut to no avail, looked away for a little bit, looked back and bam there stands a cow. They seem to appear out of nowhere.

Its because they have all moved over into ID  :chuckle: Bullblaster and I watched 17 moose last Saturday within a mile of the WA line and mica peak  11 bulls which 5 began to fight over a cow.

I agree the mica unit has really gone down hill since 2010. Nothing like it use to be

It was pretty funny to watch a 3 way bull moose fight. They all had their heads down and pushing each other. I think the cow was just shaking her head.

November rut time is awesome. I've been chasing bucks and stumbled into the big orgy thing with moose.  She must have let out a long cry and every available guy within earshot comes to get some.

Good to hear that you finally got one! I'd hate to see one of those tags go un-filled. Especially for a guy who put in as much time as you did. It should fill your freezer nicely.

I am 75 and really feel it.  it is tough to walk 12 to 15 miles every day up and down starr road  for 4 days in a row week after week .  I dug some cannas and split wood today and am shot.  it was a fun hunt.  the cow was 10 years old.  thank you,   mike w

It was a tough hunt!  My wife had a tag as well!  Any moose.  Took the first 9 days of season off, then hunted weekends from then on.  Finally got it done on November 11!  We only saw 6 moose, couple young Bulls, 2 cows and a calf on mica.  The moose numbers seem to be WAY down!

Pretty sad to see what the mica unit is now. that bull was the norm up there 10 years ago and could pass those everyday. I dunno what is causing it. Its not wolves, it may be the quality of forage is the only thing I can think of. Just 2 miles from mica peak as a bird flies east in ID there is a ton of moose! and its every year there is a ton of moose with lots of tags given out on the ID side too.

That's a nice looking bull.  That unit has really fallen off though, I saw and passed on a number of bulls like that in 08.  I'm not sure that unit is even worth applying for now given how far it's fallen.
