Here's our annual 2017 Turkey success thread. Post your pics and stories here!!
:fire.:

" In today's instant gratification society, more and more pressure revolves around success and the measurement of one's prowess as a hunter by inches on a score chart or field photos produced on social media. Don't fall into the trap. Hunting is-and always will be- about the hunt, the adventure, the views, and time spent with close friends and family. " Ryan Hatfield

Well, I took my 15 year old son over for his last chance at the Youth Turkey Hunt.  The morning consisted of one big flock that we couldnt get near but the son came out around 11:00 and the birds were gobbling like crazy.  We managed to call a tom from across the road up the hill towards our decoys.  The tom came into the field within 100 yards, stopped, and went to the top of hill.  We spent the next two hours calling and stalking our way up to him.  We got within 40 yards of where his was strutting and couldnt get him to move into view.  We crawled on our bellies withing 20 yards of him, still hidden, and still couldnt get him in view.  Finally my son stood up and there he was 15 yards from him, boom.  Turkey Down!  It was awesome, so much more fun watching your kid get one!  It was  a great hunt.

Had another outstanding year. We put about 20 birds with 8 Toms to bed Friday night before the opener. In the morning the birds went the wrong way & we missed them. We were trying to relocate the flock when we bumped into 6-7 jakes while we were standing out in the open in the middle of a field. We called & they came in closer. I shot & 2 Jakes fell down season over for me.

My buddy was about 1/4 mile away. We also watched 3 Toms & about 5 hens go to roost Friday night in another spot. In the morning our guide put up a blind out in a field slightly out of view of the roost area. The flock walked by about 30 yds & bam bam. Two big Toms for Doug.

We hunted with Bearpaw. Great people & great season.

So we got the Hut set up down below the place Friday nite. Slipped in about 5:55am. 7 yr old daughter is content with coco and Buddy Heater. It was cold. Birds come down from tree. Two big Toms strutting away. Do some super purr cluck cluck yelp yelp gobble gobble calls and here they come. The whole flock. I ask daughter which bird to shoot,  she says the Double bearded tom. So KABOOM Tom down. Go check him out , high fives and hugs. Pack him up to the shop and further beard inspection reveals a Triple Beard Tom!!!!!!  :IBCOOL:  10"  6.5" and 6" beards. 20lb 1oz. 7/8" spurs.  Got the pic thing figured out! Thanks for the idea!°° :IBCOOL:

We headed out to the end roost and the birds were very vocal. I saw some nice Tom's skyline in the tree, so we got set up and waited.naturally the birds went the other way . So we headed up the hill to cut them off. Got up the hill and started side Hillingdon to get ahead of them and I see a Tom strutting 100yds away across a small creek bottom. As I am trying to get to the creek bottom I see 2 fans on my side about 60 yds away. I crawled about 5yards closer and had a small bush in between us. I let out a couple cluck on the diaphragm and get to big gobbles back but they don't move. I'm new to calling turkeys and it was super cool to get a response. I c lucked a couple more times and they caught on and headed up hill. I was slowly crawling behind them and they stopped behind a big bush but I could see the birds behind the bush so I got to about 30 yds and the big Tom steeped out and I shot.. buy he didn't go down and he took off flying across the creek. One more shot and he folded mid flight. Got up to him and he was huge. 9 in beard and 7/8in spurs. I didn't have a scale but it was every bit of 20lbs. Super exited I finally got a big tom.

Quick story... Parked at the gate. Rode our mountain bikes up 5.5 miles or so. Hit snow. Headed back to the trucks. While riding back at the 3 mile marker heard a gobble. Stopped, dropped our bikes. I gobbled a few times. He didn't like it. So I had to go into stalking mod. BOOM. First Turkey, First time Turkey hunting, Opening day. Old single shot shotgun. What's so hard?????

First shot of the morning hits a little over 1" left, bird runs five yards looks unsteady but I put another arrow into him.  Second arrow hits a little more than 1" left.  He makes it less than five yards and goes down!

Note to self: Your bow is shooting a little more than 1" to the left.

Next bird comes in.  Spends about 10 minutes dry humping and spurring dead bird #1.  Then comes right into the shooting lane and goes into full strut.  My motto is "Don't shoot birds in strut except up the poop chute or in the head".  OK - lets head shoot this one!  Put pin 1" right of the head...arrow goes 1" right of the head!  Tom moves from my right window lane to my left window lane and goes into full strut mode again.  This time looking right into the window.  Put pin 1" right of beak...arrow goes 1" right of head.

Note to self: OMG you are such a moron!

Meanwhile, Whackmaster is shooting like the dead eye killing machine we've all come to know.  Two shots, two dead birds, both down within 20 yards of the blind.

I was shooting the new Ultra-Con 125 4 blade, Larry (Whackmaster) was shooting the Deep Six VanDyke LPS 100.

Thank you Bearpaw.  Always a good time hunting over there with you guys.
