That had to be 23-28 miles if it took 5 hrs both ways :chuckle:

Passed on about a 250 pound bear opening day

still haven't mastered the trick of getting these bears to stand on the bathroom scale that every other guy on the internet seems to know. maybe one day. im just surprised this one was under 300, never seen one smaller than that online...

I shot a bear last spring and a buck that scored 187 and was just over 30"s wide last fall and decided not to put a picture on here because of this.

I'm impressed that you guys are able to field judge a bear by a post on an internet forum that doesn't even have a photo attached

JM I get the annoying trolls on here but who really cares what they have to say post your pics for 99% of us who are going to drool over a 187" buck!

Wow, that is a big bear here in WA, the average bear is 140 to 165.
I know that's a good bear for Washington, but I know what kind of bears are in this area Im hunting.  As for lord grizzly and Idaho guy think what you want.

sorry my comment wasn't directed at you. You only said a 250 pound bear which make me believe you probably did  pass on a nice bear. I just think its funny every time someone misses or just sees a bear in Idaho its always "at least a 300 pounder" Hope you get a huge one and post it up here. I will try to not derail the thread again! haha

My 10 year old son and I did 3 days this past weekend and had a great time. The roads are horrific in the Huckleberry unit, we wound up doing a lot of hiking and had a tough time making good use of our time because the few points and peaks with any fresh growth were very isolated.  The trip was amazing though, getting that much time with just my young son and I was priceless.  We camped in various spots in a 2 man tent, had lots of ice on the tent, froze at night, got blown off the mountain with hail and snow, and didn't see any bears.  And... he didn't complain once the entire trip.  Oh yea, we cooked "mountain man nachos" in the cast iron skillet over the fire. We burned the heck out of the chips and cheese but he didn't care.  He also pulled a #dudeperfect on the new world record ground squirrel haha.  Also, he wanted to get burgers at an "old fashioned" place on our way home. No problem!

We found where one bear had been out of the den, feeding in a very small isolated area.   That was the one bit of sign we found but it was in such a tough spot we couldn't wait on that point till dark without freezing thanks to the wind.

Hopefully we connect in a month when we get back up there.

Cant wait to see some 2017 bears! I've had a few on trail camera so far but not hunting the spring season. Good luck!
