Big buck bedded...stalk or wait?
« on: December 31, 2017, 08:52:15 AM »
Last day of archery and I've got a nice buck bedded at 61yds uphill in the thick stuff. Wind is good, ground is crunchy and loud. Close the distance and try to sneak an arrow in there? Wait until he moves and then make a plan? Some combination of both? Expert blacktail advice appreciated.

Crunchy ground i would try and wait him out. Check out where he might go to from his bed and find some lanes you can stop him in when your ready to put one through him.

If you’re comfortable at 61 yards I’d be waiting it out under those conditions. Let him stand on his own time.

It is indeed. Im still sitting and watching his ear twitch through the binos. I bumped him from another bed earlier and am thinking about headed back there to wait for him to circle back. Because realistically I've got no shot here and he knows right where i am.

I waited 30 minutes for my bedded buck this year.  I was texting my wife, dad, and a friend about it.  I even took a couple of videos (poor quality).  Eventually, I decided to switch spots when the deer looked away but was spotted by a different deer I didn't see before.  Buck jumped up and BANG! :)

I can't wait to see how this one pans out.

I thought that was pretty cool, a live hunt!

I would have waited him out if there was any chance of getting a shot if he stood, eventually he would probably stand. If you make him stand good chance he'll jump and bust out of there not giving you any shot.

Well, here's the update: I sat for an hour and a half until he stood up and walked right over the ridge never presenting a shot. I'm not too broken up about it though. I've got one in the freezer already and this week is my first time hunting this property so I haven't really figured out the area yet. Looking forward to hunting his sheds and hopefully getting a chance at him next year. Time to focus my energy on ducks. Thanks for tuning in.

Well my statement wasn't 100% true,  I did hunt in a cell service area once.
Now the phone stays behind, in the truck, or better yet on the kitchen counter at home then everyone knows I don't have it with me (again).  I've found, through trial and error, that it's better to leave the phone at home on the kitchen counter then take it and have it show a bunch of missed calls on my way home, they usually go something like this:

message 1:  Hey honey, when you going to be home?
message 2:  Hey.....
message 3:  Hey!  when you coming home?? Can you stop and pick up ...( usually kids or some grocery item)
message 4:  Hey umm...so I don't know when you're coming home so I ....(some master plan to cover what I didn't pick up)

I thought the play by play was cool. Also as far as having cell service hunting there’s a lot of places in the mountains that I have better service than at my house so I’d say that’s not too uncommon.
