Oregon living/hunting???

Well its that time of year for my family and I to start wondering where we are going to be next year. My wife finishes school this year and we are going to be looking for a spot that we can both teach. I've had a couple schools in Oregon contact me, one being Salem. What do you guys think of Oregon??? The hunting also
We are going to go down the end of March and take a look.
Its nice being teachers because my wife and I can work almost anywhere, we are science and special education majors. I know I want the place to be bigger than Curlew, lol. Its really nice up here actually just dont think she can find a job in this area.
thanks...

Have a buddy who lives in Salem. Doesnt much like it. From what he says, theres no good places to fish down there that are close by, unless you drive to the coast and do a fishing trip out there. He doesn't hunt, so i dont know how the hunting is down there. Keep in mind this is just what my friend says, it is highly possible that there are very good fishing spots down there, and he just doesnt know of any

The State income tax sucks..........but being teachers, you probably won't make too much money so you won't have to pay very much.
Seriously though, I wish I lived in Oregon. Either the area up near Umatilla for the good waterfowl hunting on the Columbia River or down by Medford for the good blacktail hunting.
I don't think the Salem area would be too good........to many liberals there.

They don't need teachers in Montana or Wyoming?
If I were looking for a place to move to, particularly regarding hunting/fishing, I don't think it would be Oregon.
Idaho wouldn't be bad either...

I don't think Idaho pays their teachers very well.
I would determine where you want to live and then look for work with a few places narrorwed down. It is hard to find work, but it is even harder to find a place that you want to spend the rest of your life. Well at least it is hard to get there if you chose to live somewhere else.

Lived in Portland for 36 years before moving across the river to Vancouver. Still work in Portland but wouldn't move back over there for anything. Miss some of the hunting, more becasue it was blacktail hunting that I knew well. Getting spots over here that i like just as well. Salem is a pit in my opinion, state prison is in salem and a lot of the prisoners that get released stay in that area. Just not a nice town as far as I am concerned. Some great areas down south and east with good fishing and hunting. Some great Blacktail hunting down south and areas with some good elk hunting. Prime units are almost impossible to draw unless you have max points. If you are set on moving to Oregon, go South, Central, or east.

Some good info guys thanks. Idaho doesnt have a base teacher pay like WA. Starting pay from 19-33k, depends on the district. Montana starts at 23k, Wyoming is better, around 38k. I'm not on the bottom of the pay scale but my wife is. Trust me I have been looking into all the states in the western US. The main reason that we are even looking in Oregon is they contacted me. I guess it still sounds better than the Seattle area.

The Salem area has a LOT of Gang activity. Eastern Ore . is great fishing and hunting. Jobs are scarce....
Are you loosing your Job in Curlew?
Alaska might be a good choice.

I would think about it for awhile. They just passed a huge new tax on themselves. They are, according to the New York Times, and radio commentator Lars Larsen, the second highest taxed place in the WORLD. A lot of businesses are moving out. Some across to Vancouver. 9% out of the paycheck for income tax, adds up.

Don't move to Oregon if you depend on the state funding your income. When the last profitable industry leaves, you'll be paid with IOUs.
My mother left her teaching job in Pierce County for one in Coos County about five years ago. She took a big cut in pay. These last two years the school district has her working fundraisers on the side to raise money for teaching materials. Each year she talks about leaving, maybe relocating to a community in Washington along the Columbia.
Hope that helps.
