Badly wounded bear between White Pass and Red Pass (Glacier Peak area)
« on: September 22, 2010, 05:00:16 PM » Quote

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A few days ago I was hiking the Pacific Crest Trail and saw a black bear with what appeared to be a broken front leg. He was very near the trail and only about 1/2 mile from a trail crew camp. He obviously was having a rough time, and I think he poses a potential threat to both the hikers and the trail crew.

I'm from Alaska so I don't know the current bear seasons and whatnot, but I hope someone in the area can go in there and find and finish him. Seems like the right thing for the bear and the people using the area.

I am an active hunter as well as a hiker, so this isn't hunter bashing. Still, I hope we will all try to think twice, get in close, and fire those clean, one-shot kills from a solid rest.

The wounded bear was about 1/2 mile north of White Pass along the Pacific Crest Trail, feeding on berries out in the open.

Looks like someone took a pair of brush clippers to that poor thing. Seems awefully clean cut. Maybe a trap? I dont see that as a bullet wound...who knows?!

My bro got one a few years ago, only had three legs...tough animals.

I am thinking he chewed them off.

Was the only toe remaining broken at all?

I am wondering if he was caught in a snare?

Or maybe he damaged the toes some how and chewed them off due to irritation.

Frost bite from last winter?   Crushed under a rock? :dunno:  Looks like the toes died and fell off or were chewed off.

I'm goin with crushed/cut off by a rock. Maybe hit by a big rig? (run over by tire) Even the one remaining toe looks to be broken. Doubtful to be a birth defect as the wounds are unhealed. A snare would normally get the whole foot. I think there would be other signs if it was result of frostbite, (more loss of fur around the toes).

I would guess some type of injury whether it be rock smashing or a tendon issue that led to the dragging  of the toes  infection probably set in and became painful leadeing to the bear performing surgery on himself.  Tendon issue are common in hunting dogs, greyhounds, and animals that cover rugged terrain at high speeds.  It's kind of like the people you read about that have to cut off one of there limbs to escape a rocklside or accident. Humans / Mammals's are capable of performing incredible acts of self mutilation when they sense it is the only way they are going to survive.

The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

I would suspect a snare that didn't work properly, that wire can be nasty, or a snare used for smaller game such as a beaver or something, and he got his paw stuck...
