I usually go to the Joe Watt area for the May 1 opener.  Everyone races off to their favorite spots when the gate is opened.  I just park at the bottom and then hike up to the top.  Lately I have had to walk all day to find one antler, but some people find zero.  Hard to imagine when a guy sees all the branch antlered bulls when the hay is put out.  A lot of theories why are created at the end of the day.  I do believe people are in there long before May 1, but they can't find them all.  I found a seven point antler in the lower area on Memorial weekend a few years ago and that was after I spent the day hiking the drainage.  Try to keep a positive attitude and keep looking at the ground.  When you stop use the binos to look over the area.  Hope you find something.  I doubt I will be there this year, work and family has other plans for me.

I have heard from a good source, that at OAK Joke creek 40 percent of the bulls have not dropped.  There is not enough good food yet for new antler growth.

Thats good to hear in a way... Maybe some for the people who play by the rules. Not so good about the poor nutrition.... The elk need the good grub this time of the year especially for the calves

Well I've got sore feet but no sheds after a day out at Oak Creek.  This was my first time and my buddy and I will be trying a different game plan next year.  If any of you guys were the ones I talked to outside the gate (not the gate at the main feed station but the one to what I guess would be the north) I hope you had good luck.

At least I fared better than my buddy, he was a hurtin unit by the time we got back to the truck.  I don't know if it's true but somebody we talked to in town on the way out had stated a couple of van loads of college kids had been seen up in the area we were in the week prior scouring the hill side.  I'd like to think that rumor is false but who knows.

I can't complain too much since I got some exercise and saw some elk, deer, and sheep.

I talked to a couple of the Eyes in the Woods guys and yes it was one College class that got caught in there, not van loads and they ended up having a nice chat with enforcement.

Was also told that because of Eyes in the Woods, there was more sheds to be found this year than in the past.  Plus the early starters at all three closure areas ( Oak Creek, Coweechie, and Wenas), got to have a little chat with enforcement, because Eyes was out all night spotting for enforcement.

So Kudos to Eyes In The Woods  :salute: :salute: :salute: for helping keeping it fair for all and giving everyone an equal chance at getting some bones.

teanawayslayer.we did see the group of deer on the hill. The group of bucks were on the north side of I-90 in the median at the stop sign. Also talked to three guys from idaho that found 12 elk sheds. One was really nice. While out hiking bumped into two different elk herds and one bull that ran 10 feet in front of me.
