GMU 101-Ferry county

On nine mile creek.  Large tracks in the mud, could be a very large dog you guys decide as I'm no expert.

Also, on May 14th, 2012 in the evening  while sitting in camp I heard a low pitched howl that lasted what seemed like forever.  It was very eerie and know doubt in my mind that it was a wolf.  It was coming from bear pot trail area between Granite mt. and Bear mt.  Our camp location is same as above tracks.

I realize these aren't the best pictures.

Eyeguard and his brother were in the wenaha this last weekend trying to fill his spring bear tag and spotted at least 2 wolves. His brother cow called and the wolves closed the 600 yard gap to about 100 yards in moments. They busted them and started barking and howling... He has photo and video but I'm on a fire in Arizona so won't have them until I get home. He saw only 3 elk that weekend. Wolves are definitely in the blues.

I am not opposed to golf, for I suspect it keeps armies of the unworthy from discovering deer.

i belive i seen one up above joe watt last weekend but not sure. i have never seen a wolf in the wild but it was about 300 yards out. thought it was a coyote until i put the binos up and yep it was way to big to be a coyote. it was only about a 10 second window to see it before it went back in the trees so i didnt have enough time to get to the camra and set it up.
work hard but hunt harder

Last year we heard howls. Sounded like the wolves down the road from here at home.  Wolf Haven.  Also friend spoke with few hunters who claimed to see 5 take down open range cow at winter feeding field on trout creek rd.  Howls sounded like marble mnt. area., granite creek drainage.  West 101 close to 204 border, north of hwy 20.

Tracks and $hit (filled with elk hair) up Timberwolf.  7/6/2012.   Goose Prairie.

Tracks and $hit(also filled with elk hair) up Red Top Mountain ( North Fork Teanaway) 7/2012. Interesting enough, marked with ribbon the next day.

A quick question on the "hybrids", can you shoot them or are they protected like a wolf?

A quick question on the "hybrids", can you shoot them or are they protected like a wolf?

That is a good question.

Hybrids obviously are not wolves and are not protected by the endangered species act or by Washington state law as wolves but there may be some other law that come into play, I think it's illegal to harm cats or dogs, I'm not sure but this is a good question. Additionally, how do you determine for sure at the moment you pull the trigger, whether the animal in your sights is a wolf or a hybrid?

In my opinion it should be a top priority of WDFW to trap these "supposed" hybrids, collar the animal and release it, test the blood, and upon confirmation that an animnal is a hybrid, then track it down with the collar and kill it.

The worse thing that could happen is for hybrids to breed with wild wolves and dillute the genetic integrity of wolves. Numerous traits could be altered in the wolf population which could increase the potential for livestock losses and even wolf/human confrontations.

Okay, I'm chiming in. I used to raise hogs east of Sedro-Woolley and had a lot of problems with coyotes harassing pigs and chickens. I started carrying my Marlin .22 to dispatch the critters whenever I could legitimately claim they were bugging my live-stock. On my way out to my pigs one morning I saw what at first sight seemed to be the BIGGEST coyote I'd ever seen. I hopped out of my truck and glassed it...this was NOT a coyote! Had to be a grey wolf. At least twice the size of your average coyote. No pictures of him (or her) or tracks so all I have is my best guess. But I was born and raised in Southern California and coyotes were an every afternoon visitor to our farm. I have a LOT of experience with them and that was not a coyote. This was in the spring of 2010 in Sedro, so I think that's GMU 418. This was approximately four miles east of Sedro on the south side of HWY 20. (Minkler lake area). Seeing as I'm not an expert I wouldn't bet any of my anatomy on it, but I'm personally convinced as to what I saw.

Here is a sighting posted to another forum I visit:

Quote
Yesterday, I went fishing up the Middle Fork of the Snoqualmie with my family. I was up river about 300 yards from where my family was hanging out playing on the shore of the river. I was working my way back downstream when my wife starts yelling and making gestures that there was an animal off in the bushes. I was thinking a black bear but when I got within hearing range she says "it was a really big grey dog with a thick coat and very bushy tail". By her account ( I never saw it), the animal was on the edge of the high water mark about 50 yards away between her and the road. When she saw the animal moving at a fast pace up river she called the kids in behind her, it stopped and stared at her for a few seconds, and then continued up river through the washout. The animal never threatened her or the kids. My pistol was sitting on a towel about 5 feet away from her but she was so freaked I bet if it had threatened her she would have probably thrown rocks and forgotten about the gun.

She has seen plenty of coyotes from a far and as close as ten yards and she is convinced this was not a coyote. Later that night she looked at a lot of the WDFW wolf game camera images and she is convinced it was a wolf.

As a crow flies the western edge of the Teanaway Wolf pack is no more than 50 miles from wher we were and with the Taylor Bridge fire pushing a lot of animals around I wonder if there are wolves pushing west. We know it's only a matter of time before they make it over the Cascades to find the deer and elk populations (hello North Bend) to their liking but I always guessed it would be another year before we heard anecdotal reports and 2 years before the WDFW would acknowledge a western wolf presence. After yesterday I am pretty sure they are already here.

We have reported this to the WFDW via the web tool today.

I have been hunting the Chiwawa unit for 50 yrs, and have shot some nice bucks. The past 5 years the herds have been on a fast decline. 2 years ago i found out why, heard and seen 3 wolves several times in clear cuts and in and around the 94-95 burn.  Oh by the way i only seen one deer last year, and i will be looking to other areas.

Had my first run in with with wolves in unit 111. I had planned a 3-day pack in hunt with my uncle. We hiked in Friday evening just in time to do some spotting before the opener, saw a couple piles of wolf sh*t on the way in but didn't worry too much about it. Saw some in the area last year too.

That evening spotting we did not see any deer, moose or elk... Just one big black bear. so we set up camp. come first light we set up at our spotting location. We sat there for nearly 2 hours and did not see anything.

I heard something walking up the ridge behind and directly down wind from us so I turned around grabbed my bow and started to knock an arrow... I could see a little movement so I peaked up over the huckleberry brush and saw a black head and ears only 18 yards away. I initially thought it was a small black bear. when it saw me it let off a "woof" and moved off to my left and another ran up in it's place. I was still thinking bear at this point as I had only seen there faces thru the brush. then I stood up and got a full picture of 2 black wolves. So I dropped the bow and pulled out my pistol.

Those 2 started barking and howling at us and moved around to our left out of sight. then 3 others also all black ran thru the same opening the other 2 exited thru and circled around below us. The brush was thick so could not see them at this point but they basically surrounded 3 sides of us barking and howling. after about 10 min or so they finally wandered off.

Not a pleasant experience, wish I would have realized they were wolves when I could have put my sights on one and whacked it!! Ruined our hunt, we finished out the day spotting up there and saw nothing..  :bash: :bash:
