Title: Remington model 7 in 6mm
Post by: quadrafire on August 13, 2012, 09:52:18 AM
Have an opportunity to pick up this rifle, but was unsure of the model. I have been reading that it is similar to the 700, but smaller. When I look at the remington site it is not offered in the 6mm, but may have been in years past.
Any thoughts on this setup?

probably a good shooter!  the 6mm isn't known to be a barrel burner, so unless it's been through hell, it's probably got a lot of life left.  good round for varmints and small big game

I kinda like the 6mm, but have never handled a model 7. Is it a decent rifle?

Yes it is a nice rifle, well made.  It is a little smaller than the 700 and makes a nice quick handling rifle.  The 6mm Rem is pretty close to the 243 Win and can be loaded beyond what the 243 can do.  If I could find a real deal on one in 223 or 204 I'd jump on it in a minute.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend purchasing a model seven without handling one in person first. The model seven is much smaller in factory form than the model 700. Often people think of it as a youth or womens rifle due to it's small scale. It's actually closer to a "mountain rifle" but that's neither here nor there. The point is you need to handle this rifle first to see if it will fit you. Especially if you are a larger framed guy or have lengthy arms.

I personally love the model seven, and in factory/stock configuration prefer it to the M700. Different strokes for different folks. I like short barreled "mountain rifles" so the model seven fits my taste pretty well. A 6mm model seven, hmmm. Thanks, I just added one more dream gun to my wish list.

We have this exact rifle. All three of my kids started hunting with it. We loan it out to kids and ladies who hunt with us for deer. It's a smaller sized rifle perfect for a smaller person yet men can shoot it too. Very little recoil and great for squirel to deer sized game. Will kill elk and bear, but you should use quality bullets and concentrate on getting closer distance shots on bear or elk.

Warning: I have seen wounded bear get away that were hit pretty solid with this caliber using cheaper bullets.

This would be for my 12 yr old daughter. She is taking hunter safety this month. Thought it might me a nice "graduation" present, Not positive she is actually going to want to hunt big game, but will see this fall.

The perfect gun, both my daughters started with our 6mm Model 7 at around 10 or 12 years old, my son was 8.
