Title: Colockum Lead Cow
Post by: 206 on November 05, 2012, 10:54:43 AM
She lead a heard of 50 cows and bulls.  I knew she was a small one, but with her being in the lead gave me the best shot.  She was a stud glancing here and there trying to make a decision where to go but her mistake was stopping for a split second and being 150 yards up hill from me.

The liver was about 3 times the size of that picture.  Maybe the angle of the pic threw it off.  1/3 of it ate well the first night home and the rest is in the freezer. Very mild tasting after a soak in water and cleaned thoroughly.

Still going to eat what's left of that heart soon (pan fried).  I cut the bottom off and the top portion was well bled out.

300 Win Mag BAR.  Nothing better than having mass fire power when in action.  This year was 1 shot but in years past the semiautomatic paid off many times.  Weight is an issue, but I'll take that anytime for the payload.

My season lasted 4 hours minus a couple days scouting so I was kind of disappointed taking the red cow.  I was determined to get a grey, but when you are hunting with the wife and you got elk up hill from the road it was a no-brainer.  I took her out mainly because she was leading the pack, up hill, gave me a clean shot, and she screwed up.

Someone mentioned the "gene pool".   I culled that young cow out from future leading.

Butchering on Thursday in Moses Lake.  Who want to go goose hunting on Saturday or Sunday?  I got some fully flocked full body goose decoys and my layout blind ready to go.  I may have field, after paying with smoked fish, but will not know until I go have a visit beforehand.

On the hill I was singing, "shot through the heart and your to blame, darling, you give love a bad name, bad name".

Just got back last night. I used my 16 points to help get 3 of us in a group antlerless permits. As of Friday night things seemed pretty BLEAK on our ridge next to Stray Gulch..... . Me and  my nephew spent almost all day beating feet in the (where they had been for 4 days) Caribou and   Upper Cooke rd. Got back to camp and  was told by my brother and  other nephew how they had seen lots of elk (some from truck) in an area we were the day before.. So with less than an hour of shooting hours off we go,....l.....I dropped him off and went on down the road thinking it was not light enough for me to see . Went back and picked him up and instead of going back to camp I drove down to show him an area I was in the day before and he sees a cow on the open ridge  that I shot  with 2 minutes to spare, unfortunately down the hill a bit. We finished on it  at about 12 Am
Went down with him the next day and he filled his tag at a much better 3 PM ,so as it goes ...we had herds of them on our ridge Sunday,eh.
