I might as well start it. Way too nice a day to sit around all day inside. Grabbed the pooch and hit the hills. Only out about 45 minutes before she found her first ever (that I know of). Last year's or more likely a two year old shed based on the mottled appearance. It wasn't the BT shed I was hoping to find, but still a great way to start the new year!
-
Your not wasting any time.
-
Nice, I went out for couple hours, no luck though.
-
My aunt Brenda found a whitetail spike shed at our place, a week ago, in Curlew in a foot and half of snow, some people just have all the luck
-
Little dink i picked up about an hour ago
-
Nice! Can't wait to get out there and start looking!
-
Sweet
-
The first 2 days of the new year was awesome! We found alot of the bucks we were watching now the snow has covered up the rest
-
Wow! Nice work!
-
Not a bad cpl of days
-
Doesn't it make you kinda made when you find the old sheds in area's you looked over last year!!! Does me.
-
It does a little but in the end i am just happy i found them. But this was anew spot so i was happy that i found the old ones plus the one from last year that tells me nobody has been in there. :)
-
First trip out and first real trip for the pup, glad to be on the 2016 board!

Take a look at that base, I'm thinking he got to fighting and broke it off a couple months early from last year, but I'm not sure. What do you guys think?

It was just holding blood from last year, esp by the way it was laying. Stand it on end and drain the rest out before you bring it inside :chuckle:
-
Awesome find!
-
Thank you blackveltbowhunter, you got some nice heavy BT sheds yourself! And Lewy your right I got it draining now, I've found a couple like this and boy they can really smell haha but that chunk of bone still attached to the base and the piece taken out of the main beam is what makes me wonder if it wasn't ready to come off yet

You're right. No way is that a normal shedding situation. It caused a good bit of force to break it off like that. Could be because of a fight with another bull or some serious raking of the ground or something.
-
When do blacktails and elk on the west side start really dropping antlers? I have been out a lot the last 2 years in February, March and parts of April but have never had any luck. Looking forward to searching again this year!

I've seen several sheds that way? Not saying its normal but its not all that uncommon

yeah that area is pretty grassy so he could have been raking, I didn't think about that. Thanks for the input everyone.

Just wondering if danderson found the sheds from the clothes line bull?

blacktails start dropping anytime late December, I saw a two point still packing just 3 days ago. Elk take a bit longer, more like the end of march till May. Seen bulls packing before in first week of April.
-
I've seen bucks still packing into April and bulls in may
-
Here is the massive set from a buck we called "Wanna-be", he wanted to be a 2 point! I found the first half on Jan 2nd and the wife found the other half 2 days later. He is one of the 8 deer that stay around all the time. This is real early for around here, they usually start to fall end of Feb. Maybe the weather has something to do with it. It has been in the teens at night and upper 20's to low 30's during the day. Then throw in snow every so often. Back to the old days.
-
Been a damn good start to 2016!!
-
Out for a ride with the father in law yesterday. Picked this up on our way back home, not an hour after we passed the same spot on our way in. The tracks came right up and dropped it in our horse tracks, and turned back to his bed fifty yards off the logging road. By the time we searched for the other side we still had a 2 hour ride back and had to get going... we'll be back!(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/01/10/310305bb3f61c5303fcebe156620d77f.jpg) (http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/01/10/e3618ce62e4157e5c675dad93bd61648.jpg)(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/01/10/ed827455d1bee3455631c5d7f21a0292.jpg)(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/01/10/180c1cd775aed17bdbc000aa45ab6759.jpg)

Nice sheds everyone! Every time i show my daughter she starts crying and saying she wants them. Lol shes 2
Well we made it out for a bit this afternoon didnt have enough time to head up high so just stuck around close to home in the low land but no bone this trip but had a great time with me 3 children and my niece. My 2 youngest kids are supper excited for our trip east this Tuesday to look for some bench buck sheds the oldest is a bit bummed out he has school but understands and knows hell get to go on the weekends.
-
Great find GotElk. Fresh as well!
-
Found a couple more from last year, still no fresh but first side by side on blacktail.
-
Nice BT sheds! Only been out once so far on this side just a short little hike with the kids no luck but got the truck loaded down kids are pumped and we are headed east in the am for some bench buck sheds :-).
-
So what is the game plan for finding sheds? Just wander through the woods?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
-
Same as hunting for meat. Go to an area where you know deer or elk hang out the time of year they are dropping their antlers and start walking. A dog is great help and kids are awesome too since they are so close to the ground lol. I take mine almost everytime i go. My boys are 5 & 8 my daughter is 2. Hoping tomorrow my daughter will find her first one :-)
-
Was able to match up 3 more sets. Then used em for this lamp
-
Wow! That lamp is awesome!
-
:yeah: Awesome lamp and nice work on the sheds! Good luck LostinMountains sounds like a great time
-
Found my first sheds of the year at work today, nice matching set.
-
Awesome! Nice sheds!
-
Awesome! Nice sheds!
:yeah:
-
I finally get to post! Found these fresh beauties (separately) right off the road, sitting on top of the snow...can't wait to see what I find when I actually exert myself snowshoeing this weekend!
-
Well no luck yesterday but kids had a great time! My buddys found a couple massive 4pts and a couple other ones. Heading back over in a few hours no kids this time so I'll be able to spend more time hiking and in the cold. Kids can only handle so much walking before they are done lol (ages 2&5) but i still had a great time and enjoy every moment of them being with me weather its all day out or just a few hours. :-). Nice sheds again everyone and hopefully I'll be able to add some more when i get home sunday night. Good luck to everyone thats in the woods this weekend
-
Nice work getting the kiddos out  both my older ones have a blast going. But I'm still pretty cautious about pushing them to far in the weather department. Envious I can't get out this weekend stuck at work. Hopefully soon. Good luck!

40 ticks between me my dog and niece, 1 broken boot lace, many many miles on the ol' boots, 500 miles on the truck and some vary nice scenery we got this little guy :-)
Got back over early sat morning and it had snowed about 3" and was still snowing. I should have checked it out when the kids and i was over Thursday but i didnt i knew there was snow up there just wasnt sure how much. So any way got over just about daylight and started the ol' truck up the hill but when we got to the road that takes us back to my spot i was a little shacked to see a 5' burm of snow from the snow plow. :bash: we than decided to drive around and check some new areas. We spent half the day driving scouting and getting permission to shed hunt not seeing many bucks without head gear i decided to make a phone call and head across the river to oregon. I called a hound hunting buddy of mine he told me they had been seeing lots of bucks a week ago and this wee everything they had been seeing had dropped so i hit the gas and we were off across the big river and before we knew it we were at his place. Made introductions with his family and my niece. Since we only had 2 hours of daylight left we headed up to the hills so he could show us where we would be heading in the morning then back to his house for dinner and much needed rest. Sunday i opted to hunt an area close to his house that was holding several bucks and a hug migrating heard. (Hes not a shed hunter) so we hit the hill side and everything was looking promising until we started to run into people. Must be the local honey hole we ran into 20 people on foot and 3 on horse back. Oh well had great time managed to find one and had a guy pick one up in front of me. Seen lots of new country and got to catch up with an old friend.
Thanks for taking the time to read
The pic with the kids is from our trip over Thursday
My daughter had a great time she just didnt want to her pic take
-
Great read! And nice shed! Way to get out there.
-
Took a little hike today saw a nice BT buck with about 6" new growth but could find his head gear to save my life but my dog did find this nice Rosie shed. Got a pic of him digging it out of the grass even

Maybe I just have never seen new growth this early hell I have seen many bucks still packing.

I guess just depends on where you are. There are many still packing but lots have dropped also my buddy picked up 6 fresh low land Bt sheds 2 days ago and another guy i know got 32 bench buck sheds over the weekend.
My dad has shot several bucks in late muzzle loader season that have already dropped. My real good friend shot one this year during late buck riffle season that had already dropped. Thats the earliest one i have ever heard of
-
Ya crazy how it varies I have seen them drop all different times but defiantly never seen velvet in January. That's awesome

What would the regulation be on a buck during late buck already been shed. The way I see it wouldn't that be considered antler less at that point making it a no go. Especially since the regs state visible antler like growth as in bone. Just in conversation. Just looking at point of views. Think this is an interesting topic.
Saw one blacktail in this pass early December that already shed but was chasing a doe rutting like crazy.
-
Sorry i should had been more specific he did have one side when he shot it thinking it only was a one horned buck but when he got up to it it actually had shed the one side and then dropped the second side after he shot it. So he back tracked and found the side it had when he shot it.
-
That is early! I picked up a fresh one thanksgiving weekend in Vail several year ago during late archery. Found a few good ones today, but fresh is alluding me.
-
Last years, but still in great shape!
-
Sweet shed!!
-
Dandy sheds guys! All of them look in great shape for not being fresh.
I'll be back at it tomorrow going into a spot i found several elk sheds during elk season and also saw some nice bucks.
Good luck to everyone this weekend hope to be seeing lots of pics 😄
-
I am having a heck of a time finding BT sheds this year but the old elk sheds keep coming! My 2 yo daughter even found her first shed today and my niece found one off a bull that a friend had missed during muzzle loader season this year. His a lot bigger now 7x7 but still has the big crowns. His shed is about 3-4 years old but still has that nice crown on top and the one along the road i have driven past it atleast 20 x's this year but found it today :chuckle: Hope everyone else had a great time in the woods like we did even tho it rained most of the day
-
good finds but your kid needs to watch out in the woods wearing that bear hoodie! :yike: :chuckle:
-
Last years shed but still looks good condition
-
Two more today! Makes my total 6 so far this year...
-
Perfect match kellama!

I'm going to venture a guess that it wasn't new growth but possibly a stag buck that never shed its velvet. Seems way to early for new antler growth

Wow thats a lot of bone for a weekend. That wt shed top right looks like it was really trying to sprout a g5
-
Found this today while checking traps near a beaver pond.
-
Another matched set today. Pristine.
-
So far for 2016. Found my first matched muley set a foot apart and the GF found her first, along with some heads. All last weekend. Shooting for some moose paddles this weekend!
-
And I've gotta show last year's haul (new on this site). Only made it out about 6 days and scored almost every day. Matched my first elk set last year as well!
-
PSA: I let the heads lay as per WA law. Just always cool to find them!
-
PSA: and the dead head from 2015 was from Island Park, Idaho. I'm from the west side, and moved to Montana 3 years ago. Back in WA, Cheney, now to finish up school.

BT shed found a couple days ago
-
Today's. So upset I didn't find any moose paddles. Sooooo much sign. Any hints for finding moose?
-
Blacktail set from last weekend. I found one on a game trail then had to do a 20 minute walk, spiraling away from the original find to complete the set.
-
Ok guys, I found a bone formation in the woods today and I have no idea what it is. Can any of you help identify it?
-
It appears to be a pelvis and part of the spine.
-
I agree . Hard to tell what species it came from judging from the scale of items in the pic (pen cap)it is obviously a very small animal .
-
Turkey
-
Never thought about it being avian .....
-
Slow start for me this year
-
I would say turkey as well. Always fun finding mystery stuff like that though.

-
Took a hike yesterday, got back to the truck, and found this broken antler tip under my truck!!
-
I found a tip just like that hunting Mt. Adam's one year. It was laying right at the base of a big lodge pole that was all scraped up. He must have been angry at that tree!
-
I found a broken tine this year too, but under your truck? That's pretty awesome
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Rolled right over it when I parked, didn't notice it until I was getting back in the truck
-
Bugle buster, That is a really cool picture! Nice finds everyone.
-
My brother Jacob, soon to be brother in law Joe, Jessie88 and myself have had a blast trucking around for blacktail horns this year. I think Jessie88 already posted some. I think we have to 18 bt horns between the four of us. I suck at resizing, so I'll try posting a couple at a time.
-
Here are some more BT sheds we've picked up this year
-
Here's Big Boy, a monster BT we've gathered many sheds of over the years!
-
More Big Boy
-
Big Boy mounted a few years ago compared to what we think is his prime
-
Then elk antlers started hitting the ground....and so did our boots :)
-
And when I say elk antlers I mean big massively majestic monster elk antlers
-
And they started dropping by the pairs :)
-
All in a days work :)
-
More angles of the giant. Really quick greenscore of 420. 13 inch bases :o
-
Still can't get over that day. Found a matching set, or two, in my day, but 4 big bull sets?... Crazy.
-
Then came the weekend and my buddy stumbled on another unworldly giant!
-
Then the cherry on top was my other buddy finding his very first shed. A nice 7 point. Turns out it was the same bull from the set I had found a few days earlier, but his freshy. Such an unrivaled week of antler hunting. Time in the field is no joke, but the timing is pretty essential as well, there are a lot of horn hunters out there! Good luck to all :)
-
And the mass on those two giant sets can't be shown in pics. Tree trunks... Thanks for posting those. Now you just ruined a lot of people's workday tomorrow instead of just mine.
-
Here's my buddy Tristan's set next to his previous best ever 7 point shed. Decent upgrade :)
-
Dang! Y'all are cleaning house!! Jealous as always.

thanks for sharing the spot with everyone......... :bash:

Blues tags may not be so coveted after all.. Spread the word! I need better draw odds :chuckle:

Pretty sure pics from my folks' house doesn't give away our spot. Been hitting the same areas for years and never see anybody.
-
awesome haul I hope one day I can find something that big
are bulls dropping early this year or just the big boys start this early :dunno:
-
Haven't seen anything but mature bulls dropping so far. It is early, but not overly surprising.
Thanks for the positive comments!
-
Some dandy sheds right there. Good job
-
So why is timing so essential if there's no competition ?
-

Thanks for the positive comments!
:yeah: still too early for me to go in anywhere.....majority still packing
-
So why is timing so essential if there's no competition ?
I'm not certain there's no competition, just saying we don't usually run into people. Also, we're not out there every weekend, so between work and family obligations, the days when I can spend time in the woods with my kids/friends/family I like to take advantage of it.
-
And I thought the ones iv found this year we're big. Great finds!
-
Nice ones! Darn - just when I thought I was getting over this addiction,
-
I've days like that but keep waking up. Thanks for sharing! Looks like you missed some last year or the year before....good thing there aren't many porcupines.
-
Well, there's definitely a ton of competition. 5-10 trucks parked at all the same spots. Just a lot more land to cover than horn hunters are able, and we usually do a good job at going in further than most. Don't always do this well, most of the time it's just a great hike, but God's favor was on us this year....regardless of the competition :)
-
Found another 6 weeks later

That's a big ole narly 2! Gotta love mature blacktails
Check out the size of the 2 point pair I posted on here January 29th. Not as wide, but about 6 inches longer and just as wide at the base. Found a dead 4 point in same general area after the rut. I'd sure like to see the one that killed him!
-
Pup found her first deer set on her own a few weeks ago at 9 months old. A few days ago she found a set of big bull horns that scored 331 7/8 . The training is starting to pay off!
-
Then the cherry on top was my other buddy finding his very first shed. A nice 7 point. Turns out it was the same bull from the set I had found a few days earlier, but his freshy. Such an unrivaled week of antler hunting. Time in the field is no joke, but the timing is pretty essential as well, there are a lot of horn hunters out there! Good luck to all :)
well it helps when that group of bulls all hang out together all winter long. In your back yard.:chuckle:
-
Yeah, teanaway slayer, the group of bulls you speak of have had a couple drops. But the majority of our finds have come from elsewhere. That's what I love about big bulls.... They can come from anywhere! Every corner of this state holds amazing animals. I believe my brother met you this year. Enjoy the offseason, and good luck to you this upcoming hunting season
-
Hey Ranger Nick, looks like you have quite the keeper for a shed hunting partner! That's awesome
-
A shed is a shed, right?
-
Then came the weekend and my buddy stumbled on another unworldly giant!
Oh my what a stud! Love the drop tine and length and mass. Great find!
-
Another old one today. Saw the fork sticking up from out of the ground and thought it was a muley til i pulled it out.
-
Been out hunting pretty hard and haven't found anything. Then saw 2 NICE Bulls together today right down the skid road I was going to hit. Both had their antlers, not ready yet in my area.
-
Another old piece of bone today. Still way too much snow burying everything.
-
Another beaster
-
No sheds today, but found these... Anyone have an idea what they are?

they should probably tell everyone that they feed these elk all winter and the elk stay in private property for the most part
Hey middlefork, nice first post... This thread went 6 pages of nothing but encouraging posts until we posted our elk sheds. Don't understand the negativity. If you think we find all our antlers on private property that's fine. I don't know you and you sure don't know me. The private property bulls you speak of are just that; on private property. Most of which I have no access to. 90%+ of every antler we find is on public property. So again, all of you with encouraging, positive comments, thank you. Really do appreciate it. For the rest of you.... Have a good day

ATL of a Old deer horn I found today. An elk thought it was a great spot to take a #2 :chuckle:

So teanawayslayer, two bulls dropped by the house. Found four matching pairs and 3 singles beating feet in the mountains. 9 antlers were from last year, sitting and waiting for anyone to find em. Sound a little salty, kind of thought people would be happy for others who put on the miles and do it right, guess not. Jealously is a stinky cologne.
Congrats to all the antlers found!! More to come!!
-
Dont worry about the haters. Theyre just butthurt that they dont find sheds like that. That is a lot of awesome bone, and i couldnt care less where it was found, doesnt change a thing.

Little 12 mile trek yesterday...no new drops, all the bulls I saw had their headgear still with 'em, but still didn't get skunked. Picked 4 elk drops from last year. Looking forward to seeing some of the bulls drop that I saw though...some stunners!

First fresh shed I've ever found. Had our 9 month old baby strapped to my chest... She was not into the brush crashing, river fording, etc. I sat down and decided shed hunting with a baby is not ideal. I decided to started back to the truck and within 2 minutes found this beauty. Then continued to torture her for another hour looking for the other side! Good day

FINALLY!!! A decently larger set found!
Thats not decent, that things a stud. Despite what the interwebs would lead us to believe, a 5x5 whitey with good g4s and good brows is not lurking behind every bush. The fact that theyre fresh and unchewed is icing on the cake. I found a 6x6 heavy set that couldnt have been on the ground more than a month or two but it was chewed up already. Damn rodents.

Not really a shed as the dead deer was about 300ft away.

Not many folks can say they found a shed in velvet!!! :chuckle:

:yeah:
Did you get a close up look at it? Must have been a hard hit to knock/break off a green antler.... or was it hit in the head?

Did you get a close up look at it? Must have been a hard hit to knock/break off a green antler.... or was it hit in the head?
Saturday on my way home from the basin I Saw skid marks on left side of i-90, 75' later mashed deer on right shoulder. It looked like the other antler was laying next to head but could have been other pieces of deer, it was hit hard with other Debi scattered around carcass. Then about 200' after that I was 99% sure I saw this antler on the left shoulder. Yesterday I took i-90 home instead of old vantage so decided to stop and look. The deer had been removed and I thought i was mistaken in what i saw cause after an initial walk on the shoulder i couldn't find it. Jumped back on freeway and couple hundred feet later see it just where it was. I pulled off as tight to guard rail as possible and dukes of hazarded it out the window to pick it up...

Those velvet antlers might start to stink a bit. Cool find

Few from this year. Even a spike set!

(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160714/bf1e7c2459cea7b898075476dce9b9f5.jpg) Past few trips have been good to me, and nope he just likes to chase squirrels, flies or any animal we jump haha we had a stare down with a big 3 point buck today; 15 yards and he stood still with me until the buck trotted off a couple minutes later then he wanted to see where he was going. Everyday in the woods is a good day. Good job on all the finds everybody!

Scouting shed. Glad I found it, I was getting fatigued from hiking around. It lifted my spirits a bit... and my feet.
-
Nice find Southpole.
-
Biggest elk shed I have ever found. This weekend hunting for deer.
-
I also found a good sized dead head. Yes I left in there :IBCOOL:
-
Little 3pt blacktail I found during muzzy season. Walked right by it the day before on the logging road. Guess the day before I was more preoccupied by the young coyote I nearly stepped on as it was pouring and had its head in the grass after a mouse. I coulda poked him with my gun barrel.
-
Out hunting deer ,almost walked right by it. Thank god I looked back.

First elk shed while scouting for deer.

All my sheds of 2016 so far
Top- found it while hunting a unit where i used to hunt(and where i found a different one).
Left- A very old two point muley shed i found while scouting some farmland i hunted back when i was around 10 years old.
Rightest Left- A three point Muley shed my dad picked up in the same farmland.
Right- A giant Blacktail shed i found several miles below where my dad elk hunts. We couldn’t get to the top since the roads were badly snowed in. But it was laying next to an old logging road. Found it in April.

First shed I have glassed up.
-
Right on northforker. I glasses my first elk set this year. I was super stoked. Most of my sheds i stumble upon 10 yards or less lol

Found this today
-
Little forky BT shed. Only two or three inches of the base were visible, the rest was completely buried in the ground. Still amazed I found it...
-
Here's another I found a few weeks ago. Have 4 years of pics of this deer and had never found a shed of his until now. A little chewed up( has three eyeguards on this side, all chewed off) and another sticker that was gone but in pretty good shape. Lots of mass. Maybe I'll run into him this late season.
-
Great find!
-
Got lucky and glassed one up and the match was under the tree...that never happens for me!

Let's see those sheds.

Gotta love it when people say that an area is cleaned out! Yeah it was. This one was visible from the highway :chuckle:
-
During the general deer season my son in law walked the upper portion of the new ranch property shown in the first photo. Right at a 1000 ft' elevation rise from bottom of property to the top corner.
He did have an opportunity on a couple of bucks bedded together, one of which is clearly visible in the second picture, straight down and slightly left from the single pine tree right along the edge of the open field. You can just make out his head sticking up. The second, smaller buck is right next to him on the right (hard to see). They managed to elude him however after an extended stalk. He got within 50 yards and figured they were gone, but they were still in their beds. Suprise and advantage to the deer. They did wave at him as they left though :chuckle:.
However he was rewarded with a pretty decent elk shed. Not the biggest, but pretty good mass for its size and in excellent shape. Last three pictures.

First spotting scope shed! My 4th paddle for the year too.
-
My buddies also stumbled onto a honey hole while I was at work. 13 sheds in one canyon.
-
And my GF picked up her first elk shed! It's been an eventful past month!
-
A few ATL from this year. And the boy always loves to go!

Very good find looks like he had two kickers? I'd go back to that area every year looking for the genetic sheds

Yep he was a 7 point with a little spur that may or may not count as a point! I think this is an old bull that has started regressing. Would have been cool to see him in his prime.

Not sure if I posted these but I matched these up elk hunting.
-
Dang, nice finds wet woods hunter

Yeah that's a sweet score!
