Title: EMERGENCY BEAR ADVICE???????
Post by: LongTatLaw on September 29, 2007, 08:52:15 PM
Tomorrow (Sunday) is my last day free to hunt until next weekend... so advice after 2pm tomorrow is much less helpful.

Tonight... while bear hunting... I saw an absolute monster!!!!  :o
He was slinking his way along the edge of a green pasture. when I saw him in the fading light my immediate thought was he was a angus bull...no joke I thought he was a cow!!!  Turns out he was a solid black bear no question over 400 pounds. He was every bit of 7 feet long and his head looked 2 foot wide. He didnt have ears!

I came around the bend in the trail to see him at 80 yards... Walking right toward me   I took two steps to get to the perfect tree for a rifle rest and he never saw me but I nearly stepped on a bedded 3x3 blacktail
(I had no idea he was there... probably because I was looking at sasquatch out in the green field!!!!

Well, the buck busted out like a freight train and it disturbed the bear enough that he stepped into the thick stuff and my efforts to circle around and cut him off didnt work but I didnt get the impression he was scared or knew I was there... :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:

I plan to sit that green field tomorrow afternoon hoping to take the bear or maybe even take my bow instead of the rifle to try to take the bear and/or the 3x3 (plus eye guards) as a consolation prize. Maybe in a tree stand.

IN YOUR OPINION.......   What the chances of seeing that same old monster boar in that same pasture?

Should I sit quiet and let his repeat what he did tonight? Should I stalk BearManRic down  ;) and buy his magic call to bring my big boy home???

Will I never ever see him there again given they can move 20 miles a day?

This area gets very very little hunting pressure or even human activity... and its a long narrow green grass/clover field that in between a thick fir ridge line and a large river.

what are the chances he will be back tomorrow night?  :dunno:
should I give him extra incentive by calling him with a rabbit squealer?  :dunno:

I want all the opinions I can get!

is there a apple orchard near by or a food scource. i would sit in a tree stand and do fawn in distress. or on the ground watch the wind. do the fawn in distress kinda mellow not agressive. just every ten minute's or so. dsound's like a good place if no one is around. good luck. Rick

this time of year bear's arent going to waste energy. he will be close. if you have a closed reed just go wa   wa  wa wa. to sound like a deer or fawn in distress. have fun. Rick

Unless you are a good caller, I wouldn't.  He is there for the clover.  If not disturbed, he will be back most likey as their big moves are over just as bearman said.  He will be there grazing the heads off the clover just as your big black angus would.  If he is call shy at all, you'll blow your chance.  Take him with the bow and get that record in the books. Good luck.

Be patient.........don't call just wait him out he will be back. Don't shoot the deer either just wait on the bear and don't tell anyone else about him.

Well...NO LUCK!

I took the bow and climbed a tree... I did some calling early but laid off way before the time I saw him last night!

I had several cow elk hanging out for the last few minutes of hunting light...  3 does seen...all well within bow range! Not a chance of me shooting a doe! The cows seem like they would have been fun but I was after that big old bear so I wish they wouldnt have came.

Any way,

I saw game and froze my but off with no bear... I would have gladly killed that buck that scared the bear yesterday but he was afraid of getting stepped on so he didnt come back.

Ill be back when I can get back but the image of that bear is gonna haunt me until I put something else on the ground...or better yet... put him on the ground!

I think Id like to see Michelle do him up full body all fours and proud!!!  My wife might kill me but its worth it!

Thanks for the advice everyone! Ill let ya know if I ever see him again or get him!
