Title: Elk 101 University of Elk
Post by: Wetwoodshunter on June 17, 2016, 06:12:03 AM
After seeing some reviews on Corey Jacobson's course I jumped in and got the on line elk course for myself. I have been amazed so far on the amount of information that is in the course.

If anyone is trying to step their elk game up a notch I think it's worth the $. Phelps and Brian Call helped out in sections and the course covers everything from application strategies, conditioning, gear lists, to quartering and packing.

If your interested, go to Elk101.com and check it out.
Currently I know two discount codes for $40 off.
Gritty40 or Phelps40 - I think you help support Jason and Brian depending on which one you use.

Also if you sign up please put my email down in the referral box. It gives me a few chances in the drawing for some new gear and a $10 gift certificate at Elk 101.
Email: Joe.r.petersen@gmail.com

Thanks guys and gals! If you have any questions about it let me know I'll know more as I get farther through the course.

Wetwoods,

I signed up for the course the day it went live, after knowing about it before hand and taking part in the lead up "project success" that Cory did months before the UEH launch. GREAT STUFF!

I have since showed this to my hunting buddy (haus), my dad and uncle (both of who are in their mid 60's, both longtime elk hunters) and they are completely blown away at the depth in which Cory goes into detail in the various modules. At this moment they are watching the "how to use diaphragm elk calls" tutorials on heavy repeat.... :chuckle:

Folks the course is worth looking into wether you're a seasoned hunter or a just starting out! Even at the regular price, the amount of videos and in-depth written text alone is well worth the investment.

My review
It's well worth th $60 just by the volume of centralized info.

Hey guys, I found another code today if the other ones don't work anymore.

TRO30 gets you $30 off. (The rich outdoors)

I'm looking forward to the calling module but this week am working on Tacoma so I bet all the other people in my hotel would get pissed about that guy that locked an angry bull in his room.

I had some free time last night and made it through the gear list section. Kinda made me think how much extra stuff I end up taking for a day hunt that I rarely use.

Thanks everyone that referred me so far. I really appreciate it.

From what I can gather this is targeted mostly at archery hunters.  Is that correct, or does it also go into the issues faced by modern firearm hunters?  Given that modern season is usually well after the rut, while archery season is during the height of the rut, I'm not sure if this has much applicability to my hunting.

Sumpnz,

There are plenty of take aways for a rifle hunter in the course. Even though Corey is a archery hunter he goes into late season tactics and differences in elk behavior later in the year. A lot of the information in the course surrounds how to plan a successful hunt and making sure you have the right gear.

Granted, if you have hunted elk for 30 years and are successful the majority of the time you might get less out of it than I have. But for me Rosie's are still a huge challenge and I need all the help I can get. Plus for me, I really enjoy the course content so my entertainment value is pretty high.

I figure if I get one more shot opportunity off taking the course, in my whole life, it was worth my time and effort to take the course.

I've been listening to him on a bunch of podcasts and of course thru his University of Elk course videos. He seems like a really cool guy that enjoys sharing what he's learned so people can be better elk hunters.
What was he like in person?

So what is everybody's favorite chapter so far?
Google Earth.

First year hunting the east side so its definitely helped correlate what we've seen on the ground with the cams and scouting thus far, and also helps confirm field observations from my hunting partners previous season.

I'm not sure how well it correlates to the west side being that its such a different set of dynamics involved compared to basically 95% western elk hunting. I've scanned over areas where we've hunted for years and I dunno. Some of the very high elevation areas its adaptive for sure, but lower where your in industrial timberland is kind of a toss up. It would be awesome if he did a coastal specific addition to that module.

D-Rock, it was great shooting with you on Saturday! I hope your trip home was quick and uneventful.

Thanks for the support with the online course guys...quite a few people have mentioned that the Scouting with Google Earth chapter was their favorite, and quite a few more have asked if they could get a sneak peek inside the course before they decide to buy...so, I have opened the chapter on Scouting with Google Earth for free viewing through tomorrow (Wednesday) at noon (MST). Also, the discount codes mentioned above are still active for $40 off the price of the course. Here is the link to view the content in Module 2/Chapter 2:

How beneficial is the course for west side elk hunting?  Moved out here a few years ago and this year will be the second year Im purchasing an elk tag.  Did very little scouting last year and turned my elk hunt primarily into a bear hunt with a ... if I see an elk great, if I dont o well.
Title: Re: Elk 101 University of Elk

Davk, I think that the course would be very beneficial to all elk hunting. Especially the sections on how to setup on elk and calling, or locating elk when its thick and deep. There is a lot of information in this course that I took for granted and a few things that I realized were cardinal mistakes that I was making over and over again. I think for the price of the course and the information that it has in it that it is worth every elk hunter regardless of their experience to use it.

Last weekend I was hanging out with a friend who works for Trophy Taker and we briefly talked about this. He mentioned to me even with his experiences guiding and working in the industry involved in elk 365 that the course was worth it for him to read.

Additionally, here is a new discount code:
Survey40 this gets you $40 off.

It would be extremely helpful to the westside hunter. I cut my teeth on industrial timberland elk, and love it still. I had alot of my preconceived ideas in my head that were shattered when I actually spent some time WATCHING elk behavior. Something I think is very difficult in the coastal jungles. IMO there is little difference in behavior from coastal elk to "western" elk. Only perceived differences due to a variety of factors.

Title: Re: Elk 101 University of Elk

The course has a lot of information for all hunting situations. There are modules as an archery hunter you don't want to skip that you may never want to read as a rifle hunter But those parts are small. I see a huge benifit if you hunt elk period, from getting tags to processing your game every detail is covered.

Plus Corey's live Q&A tonight was awesome.

How beneficial is the course for west side elk hunting?
Some of the modules have a linear value regardless of where, when, and how you hunt. While some of them have a varying value based on the same factors. So to answer your question  :dunno: all depends on you. I think its worth it though in general the overall value is there, especially considering the discounted costs posted.

That being said, like 95% of the literature and video's on elk hunting, if your a westside roosevelt elk hunter your always looking for that 5% that's actually geared specifically to the elk you hunt.

It's the same in concept, elk is an elk sure, but there are differences that to me would warrant adding a roosevelt specific subsection to some of the modules. I'd think the profitability is there for the time needed to create it considering the number hunters on the coast.

Hey guys!

For those of you on the fence wondering if the info applies to westside hunting, I would say yes. About 75% of the course covers general elk hunting topics that aren’t weapon/season/area specific (planning, scouting, fitness, gear, general elk knowledge, common challenges, tracking, field dressing, packing, etc.). The remaining 25% probably leans more to “rut” hunting (more archery) with topics like setting up, calling, etc., and most of those topics apply regardless of area. And within those categories, there are also multiple late-season topics as well (non-calling tactics, locating elk, glassing, etc.).

The course certainly isn't tailored to hunting the thicker westside elk, but most of the information will definitely apply and be valuable.

Having gone through about 75% of the course so far, I agree! Well worth the money. Think about it,  if one were to kill an elk because of something they learned in the course, worth it in my book. Besides, it's equivalent to a tank of gas and I've learned far more already than I would with several scouting trips that would take at least a tank per trip.
