Title: Idaho GMU Clarkia/Potlatch Area
Post by: Ghunt on March 24, 2017, 08:34:08 AM
I'm planning to go elk hunting this year in an area that I used to go to almost 10 years ago. Clarkia Idaho area. Last time I hunted there I heard rumors of the potlatch shutting that area down for hunting. Has anybody been in that area recently and know any info? Anything would be greatly appreciated.

I think that info is correct there was a couple threads about it on here. I don't think they are closing down all of the ground but sounds like a like portion of it. I looked at there site awhile back. It had not been updated yet, maybe it is now?

I just looked in that area with OnXmaps and they have so many tine parcels that are just bordered with ntl forest and other parcels in the middle of the forest. I don't see how they can enforce such a strict border out there. I'm just thinking camp just outside their land and only get a couple atv passes. Save a little bit of money.

I wouldn't waste my time with elk hunting that part of 6. The locals do pretty well but the live with those animals.  One of the most heavily hit units in the state by wolves.  Check up the st Joe for otc opportunities.  Late season deer is fantastic in 6, but for elk if you see an elk in 1 week of hunting you will be in the minority.  The wolves and people push the elk large distances on a daily basis. You will see fresh tracks in the mornings but nothing during shooting light.  Just my 2 cents.

Potlach did not "shut down" any land. They simply imposed a fee system. We typically camp on USFS land and ride in on our ATVs. I have not hunted the area for Elk, but typically spend a few days in there in the summer camping and riding.
