Title: JACKPOT!!!
Post by: go4steelhd on May 04, 2017, 05:57:31 PM
As many of you who know me or have followed some of my threads have heard I hit a jackpot on a slot at Northern Quest Casino. Well actually two in the same night. How this story starts is my wife asked me what I wanted to do for my birthday. And if we wanted to spend are first night away from our almost three year old son. So I said let's book a night at Quest and see if grandma will watch our son Chase. So we went over I was playing craps and started winning! After being up about $600 in 15 minutes I went to find my wife at a slot machine and sat down to talk to her. I played the machine next to her and hit almost $1300 jackpot in only a few minutes. Then they casino cut me a check after the paper work was completed. We went and had dinner and I was all grins :IBCOOL: Then we decided to stop back the slot machine before going back to our room for the night. This time I sat down for about 5 minutes and BOOOOM! JACKPOT  this time for almost 9K. So the casino cut me another check and we called it a night. Because I wanted to go home with the $$$.
I came up with three options of what to do with the money:
1. Pay 10K off the house mortgage.(This was the most sensible but least likely)
2. Go buy a ranger and pay a good chunk off in cash.
3. Go on a dream hunt!!!!

Well this is obvious what I chose to do. After lots of research. The animals I wanted to hunt were  Grizzly, Dall sheep, or mountain goat. I still hope to some day draw a mountain goat tag. So I was down to sheep and grizzly. After a few weeks and scrolling thru guides for either hunt. I pictured my self walking up to either animal. And the one I personally would get the most satisfaction from was a grizzly. So after talking to maybe 20-30 outfits I learned that BC is really tough to book a grizzly hunt due to quotas. So I began looking in Alaska. After asking many questions of different outfitters I learned a 7 1/2 to  8 foot interior grizzly is a big one. Or if you hunt coastal brown bear you are looking for a 8 to 9 1/2 foot bear.(They have areas that you have a realistic chance at a 10 mega bear but that is WAY out of my budget for this hunt.

So follow along as I post up the story of the hunt. This will have a ton of photos. And I usually have issues getting them to post. So bare with me.

Next was a trip to Cabelas to get a few things that I don't have. Like rubber back pack, a cannon for a rifle, and some rubber hip boots. Then I took my son over to there game room in Post falls Cabelas so he could go bear hunting to  Next my friends started sending me tips of how to stay safe on my hunt. Then off to the range to sight in and practice with a 338-378 weatherby. I love this gun. I cannot believe how accurate it is. I probably put 200 rounds thru it from 100-450 yards.

Soon it was time to head out to southeast Alaska. I've never been to Alaska so I have taken a lot of pictures. When I landed in the airport and went and picked up my bags I seen a full body mount brown bear. I felt this would be a good sign and hopefully good luck. I called for a shuttle from the hotel. After a very long wait and a no show from them. I carried all my gear to the hotel. Who knows what people that were driving by thought  :chuckle: The next morning I caught a ferry and met up with my guide. We went to the range any checked if my rifle was still on. Then got are gear ready for the next mornings hunt.

This is the cabin I stayed in the night before the hunt. The bear is the biggest ever recorded by the fish and game in the region. It's a 10 foot 3 inch with a 26 12/16 skull. A true giant. Then the next morning we headed out for my hunt. We seen a black bear which we opted to pass so we could get in to our hunting area with high tide. And the weather and water were supposed to get rough for a few days. We all so seen 5 moose. We launched the boat a 16 footer and headed across the bay. The water was way rougher than I ever would have attempted, but I figured he knew what he was doing. Then we made it to are destination. We had all our stuff in dry bags and we were in hip boots and 3/4 rain jackets that go to your knees. Which is handy from all the water that sprays in while we crossed.

This is our gear for the next seven days. The we set up camp at the base of a mountain against a rock ledge. I took a few pics of a rock bluff that we used as a perch to glass from for this hunt. We had to use a rope to climb up to it due to the steepness and how wet everything stays from the rain. It's steep and pretty dangerous considering how far you are from help. Then there are a few pics of the view from the perch.

Post by: go4steelhd on May 04, 2017, 10:58:24 PM
Few more pics from the bluff. And a few low tide pics. On low tide you are glassing about a 1 mile by 1 1/2 mile flat.

This time of year in Alaska they have about 21 hours of day light. So the way he hunts them is taking 4 1/2 hour shifts to glass. Then go sleep , eat, etc. This proved very effective because we seen more bears mid day than in the morning or night. A mature boar has roughly a 90 mile range. So you really don't know when he will show up. But if he does you want to be watching. The first day at the end  of light we seen a boar and a sow 1400 yards away and moving very quickly away. I got a few quick photos and they were gone. It was a shooter we felt. They feel in this area any male over 8 foot is a shooter. He felt this bear was 9 foot. Which this was getting me excited because that was my goal for the hunt. Was anything over 9 foot. But they disappeared as quickly as the had originally appeared. The next day I got a quick look at a big bear a mile away mid day. But he did not like something and ran back into the timber after only being out for less than a minute. Then a few hours later a few 2 1/2 year olds showed up in a different spot. I videoed them but did not take any pics.

Then a big boar with a great coat comes into 400 yards. We watched him and a sow come in from 750 yards. I videoed them and took pics. It was the two from the other side of the flats that we had seen earlier in the hunt. One shot I busted both front shoulders and he was down.

@ Rainier
The skinning took about three hours with both of us. And a storm set in. It rained something serious. We were able to take a canoe to with in maybe 200 yards of the bear. Then we packed everything to the canoe. We made it back to camp about midnight. Then we had 8 foot seas and could not get out for a day and a half. So we just hung out and I took pictures and videos of some other smaller bears. When we went back it was 4 foot seas. Even at that in a small boat you really need to pay attention or it could be your last day. In the lower 48 I feel like we are in charge. Up here it is so raw and rugged. Mother Nature rules. Not us, it comes very clear quickly.

One thing I did not bring was gun oil. I would highly recommend it. I had cleaned my gun the week before the trip with a nice coat of oil the. Wiped it clean. Went to the range put three rounds thru it to get any thing out of the bore and left. I think we were only out five days total. The rust sets in fast. I will completely take the gun apart and clean and oil it.

Just curious if they are any good.  I've heard that the interior grizzlies are good, about like black bears, but I don't know anyone who has eaten a coastal brown.

Rolling up the bear to freeze the hide. Then we went to check out some mountain goats. I probably seen 25 or 30 that day. Maybe 50 total. It's hard to tell how big the mountains are but they are from sea level to 6000 feet. He tells me it takes one full day of hiking to get above timber line. Some day.....

He has 24 inch skull. And was 9' 1" squared. There guess was 12 years old. But with his tooth wear they said he maybe older. The fish and game took a tooth so at some time I should be able to get the age. He was not a mega bear. But he was a big bear.

The one I shot...

Quote
I did get my results back from Alaska Fish and Game.  This bear was 6 years old, skull legnth was 15.19 inches and had a width of 8 inches.  Total size 23.19.

The average age of bears taken by hunters during the regulatory year 2010 was 8.75 years.  The average skull size of bears taken by hunters that year was 22.38 inches.

So, younger than most taken last year, but he had a bigger head.  I was surprised how many bears are killed that are this small.  With all of the 8-10 foot bears taken, there must be a lot of 6 footers taken as well...

I'm going to guess 14 +/- 2 years, based on a SWAG using what I can see from the pics and the tooth wear characteristics described in this compilation http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2078152015000139

Am I reading this correct?  You are going to use a dentist as bait for a brown bear hunt?  I would double check the regs on that.

It's a grey area in the Alaskan regs :chuckle:
But the locals prefer a dentist over an attorney.
Something about the attorneys reak of BS way more
Both are good choices   :chuckle:

I had the root canal yesterday - worst choice of the two, by far. This guy definitely deserves to be brown bear bait. Remember Cecil!!!!!

Double lung,
Thanks for sharing that it's very interesting. We will see how close we are next year. I've always thought it was cool that they age them and share the findings

Love the front claws on that bad boy.

I didn't appreciate those claws the first time around. Those are some nasty scrapers for sure. Amazing equipment those animals come with.

I forgot how long the claws were.  :yike:

He was aged at 17 years old by the AK fish and Game, So I think this was a big as he would get. I was told they are in their prime from 15-18 years old
