Title: WTB Ames burlap pillow targets
Post by: Tjv28 on May 31, 2017, 09:47:06 PM
I can't seem to find these anywhere... let me know if any of you guys have any, or a connection for buying some. They are the ones that are double sided and have grommets for hanging. I have 5 acres and I'm trying to set up a walk through course. Thanks

Burlap bags stuffed with grocery bags work well if you have a stock of plastic bags.

They are shut down. My buddy scrapped out their printing press. I was told by the owner she sold off the printing matts. Pics of the equipment being hauled off is on the Silver Arrow Bowmen FB page.

I tried to talk to her about selling a few years ago.  She didn't seem interested at all.  I had a guy with experience on that press who understood how dangerous it was.  Seemed that was one of her biggest concerns.  But still couldn't even get to topic of money.  Shame to see another good NW company/product go way.

That's interesting you say that because she told me she couldn't find any buyers that had $. She said she only had buyers that wanted her to finance everything including the move of the equiptment.

Hmmmm.  Been about three years I spent hours on the phone with her.  Left my contact information incase she were to change her mind.  I even sent my guy who had experience on that press to help her get it up and going if she didn't sell.

She told me she had a few other businesses that were taking up all her time.  And that one of these days she was going to get it up and running.  Not interested in selling at that time.

New broadheads got me side tracked so I didn't follow through each year as I originally had planned.  Guess I should have.  Could have been a nice little addition for us.  Or a nice retirement income business.

She did get the press up and running. I had purchased seconds from her for Silver Arrow. Before seeing the equiptment scrapped out I had talked to her about a year ago. She had hired an older guy with experience to set up and teach her about it. She said when her husband retired he had no interest in helping her with it so she did it for a couple of years then pulled the plug.  I'm pretty sure she set the machine up about 5 years ago as I have purchased seconds several times.

I was very surprised when she said she couldn't find any buyers, mostly because it is the kind of business that could be run from anywhere that UPS covers. Dunno.

Yes, I am surprised too.  Having non-FET items mixed with normal FET taxed goods is a good mix to have.  And the targets give an avenue to work with ranges as well as retailers and distributors.  Would have been a great addition to our company or a similar small company.  Thinking she didn't try too hard to find a buyer.  Especially since we would have jumped at the opportunity to at least bid for it.

Let's start a business!

Often thought a person could buy a small old chicken farm with the nice wooden coops.  We had one slip through our grasp a while back.  Was thinking they could be converted into a great large format silk screen assembly line.  Not as efficient as the old Ames printing press, but you could do some things that press could not.

Been researching many ideas over the past 10 years that might lend itself to bringing back the low cost burlap type bags and target faces.  So far everything has been way too expensive or lacks the weather resistant durability that Ames brought to market.  It really was a great product at the right price.

Ames bought the last burlap printing machine in the USA from their supplier when the supplier decided they were going to stop. Roughly 5 years ago is when they started printing their own designs on burlap. She actually bought the business from the previous  owner, she was an employee for him.

I thought she must not have looked for a buyer very hard either because I thought it was a sweet business or complement to an existing one.
