So I Drew a Mt. Spokane North Cow Moose tag. Just wondering if anyone would be willing to share a little info on the area. I used to hunt the Colville area but haven't for years. I plan on doing plenty of scouting before Oct. 1st but just need a few ideas on where to start. Thanks for the help!!!

Google "Inland Empire Paper Company" and get their permit, that will give you access to a good portion of the unit.
-
congrats
-
Congrats on the tag!
I hunt IEP land for deer and see cows quite regularly when I am in the woods. It should not be a problem to fill that tag.
-
:yeah: had this tag before, you'll have fun. Good advise on IEP.

My son drew a youth moose tag for this unit. I'll be honest, I know nothing about moose hunting. My son's only 11, so he'll be counting on me. Any tips??
-
Congrtas.
Any moose hunt is a good hunt

Yes, shoot on the uphill slope of the road. I'm not being a wise arse either, that's the #1 tip I have and it comes with experience

Sorry but Chris McCandless was the first thing that popped in my head when I read this. :chuckle:

I had the tag last year. See the moose to the left. PM me for any info, I'll be glad to help. Buy the IEP pass like the others said. I can point you to other areas as well on timber company land. The IEP land was pretty much the only non-walk in land available. I killed my moose on the IEP land.

Maybe, but if you saw my son shoot, you'd think more along the lines of Chris Kyle!!

Duly noted! I can see the wisdom in that!

good evening firefighter 12, my name is Mike and I too drew a cow tag, in area117. I'm USAF retired/ disabled, so I have time to scout the area. Is your tag in area 117?The state rules/regs aren't easy to understand. I will take what time I need to recon the area, never been up there, I live outside of Clarkston, lifelong hunter. If you have the same area I would be glad to share intel with you. Thanks in advance and good luck. fishingfool :hello:

Hey benhuntin, thank you for your great offer. Right now I'm looking for an area to start scouting. Then the fun starts! Mike

Gonna be tough to see moose at 100 degrees but you can learn the roads and the lay of the land. I'll send you a pm. You will find a cow no problem.

My advice is to cover a lot of ground during primetime. They quite often come out of the thick stuff to feed early and late in the day, and middle of the days are pretty slow, so that's a good time to be looking for sign so that you can check back again at primetime. Keep moving and cover a lot of ground and you won't have any problem finding moose. As mentioned, they are big, so take care as to where you dump one or the hunt may become a different type of memory than you bargained for.
-
Hey buckblaster, thanks for sound advice, I will check the two "golden hours" very carefully. Yes--- ABOVE the road! Rule #1. ff :hello: :yeah:
-
Thanks everyone for the pms and advice. Headed out in just under a week and looking forward to it. Everyone seems to agree to shoot it on the uphill side :chuckle:.
-
I would certainly by a permit to access the paper company land.
-
Do you have spots picked out or are you still needing help?
-
Howdy Washington muley, I am in the process of planning a recon trip to Chewelah to do some scouting very soon. October was a major goat-ropin' for us,now on to the important things. The latter part of next week is looking good to head north, I'm hoping. :hello: :hello:ff
-
Chewelah is not really that close to your unit.

Mornin' beenhuntin, I checked my tag and my area is 117. Sorry for the initial confusion, I may have been a little excited.... ff
-
Chewelah would make more sense with a 49 tag

Also no need for a paper pass then.

Thanks for the heads up, wa wildlife bio gave me a list of places to check out, she sounded like she was very familiar with the area. Will be AWOL till sunday pm, will check in then. Adios, ff

good luck!!

Back home, have repairs to take care of on the RV and the wheeler. Get the kinks worked out and then it's moose time. Thanks to all for the advice and intel. ff

A big thank you to the hunt wa community for some pointers and pms for the area I was drawn in. Connected yesterday with a nice cow. She had a very large bull with her who wouldn’t leave even after walking to within 15 yards of him. :IBCOOL:
-
Congrats!!
-
Congratulations firefighter, glad to hear of your success!

Greetings all, we are headed to Chewelah this morning, have reservations in the RV park in town. No need to fight the snow and slop with a trailer in tow. Weather is our biggest concern, freezing fog and such. A sincere thank you to all of for the advice and help. Will keep you in touch. ff :hello:

That dang weather potentially wreaking havoc on another hunt. :bash: Good luck and I hope you get a good one.

Howdy all, we gave up on the moose/whitetail hunt in 117. Covered a lot of country in pickup and ATV, saw one moose track and numerous whitey tracks. Talked with locals in Chewelah and Colville, same sad story-- wolves. Heard of one whitey buck Saturday evening, no moose sightings. A sincere thank you to one and all, we appreciate the offers to help and the advice. Adios, Mike n' Kathy. :hello:

Ouch, sorry to hear you didn't connect. I learned again this year it isn't always about filling a tag. Hopefully you had a good time seeing some new country.
-
Well Bummer......Hope you at least enjoyed the adventure. Tough to eat that tag I'd imagine
-
Yes, we saw some new country and had a play day in the snow. But-- those darn tags are awful dry. :chuckle:
