Title: Wolves in Idaho
Post by: Tracker0721 on September 27, 2017, 02:55:58 PM
there's now a group paying $250 per wolf killed in Idaho, why aren't more Washington folks going and bringing back our kills to show how much we hate wolves? An out of state license in Idaho is 154.75 and a wolf tag is 31.75. Leaves $70 for gas and such. But you get 5 wolves a year so really if you make 1 trip and score a couple you make profit. I count as a disabled vet so you can bet your ass I'm paying my $70 to go kill wolves. Also, a wolf pelt is selling at 500-600 bucks. So $7-850 a kill.

Who's the group paying? Do you have to have a special license to sell a pelt?

The group is on Facebook. Foundation for wildlife management I believe. You join the group, kill the wolf, bring it to the wildlife department to be checked in, the group sends a check. RMEF has donated $20,000 to the group the past couple years.

I belong to the organization, I'm glad to do my part to help pay to manage wolves. All hunters should belong. They are really focusing on wolves in the wilderness now, wilderness wolves are worth more, one of my guides is going to trap wolves in the Frank this winter.

Best of luck to you.  I doubt you even see one, let alone get a shot.  One of the hardest animals to hunt here.

I've seen a few, cousin hit one with his truck. Almost had a shot on one. Found a dead one that got caught in a snare and broke it. They're around

You bet they are around, hunt hard and you can get them. Another one of my guides killed the second wolf in Idaho, he was glad he was 2nd!  :chuckle:
Since then he and his dad called in a pack of 5 or 6, I can't remember which, and got them all! Put in your time and try different methods, you will be rewarded, pun intended!  :chuckle:

I've called one here in Ferry. Only howled back. Buddy had a pack howl back. So I'm hoping if there's more in Idaho than around here it shouldn't be overly hard to be part of the 1% successful wolf hunters. If it was easy I'd stick to coyotes around here 😉

Maybe that's a hunt CNW would put on their website? In another topic someone was suggesting CNW supports hunting!  :chuckle:

I think this was the topic: http://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,218612

I'm not so sure there is a higher wolf density in most of Idaho, the NE has some serious wolf numbers now and they are being hunted in most parts of Idaho, so maybe more wolves in wilderness areas or on key winter range when animals are down and bunched together.

Oh I know, just ran into them Sunday morning.  They were howling down in the canyon all morning while I was deer hunting.  You rarely SEE them though.  They dont come in the open very often.

My point is that they are hard to hunt. Non residents come over here and don't even find elk, which are plentiful.  Just know you will have your work cut out for you.

Beyond tough as hunts go, you would be lucky to get $200 for a raw pelt if you know how to process it.  Never will be a paying deal unless you are very good at trapping and run a VW diesel to check your lines.

Hides can bring quite a bit more than that, some guys are getting $700-$800 plus you get the payment form the group. A good trapper can supplement his other earnings from fur and make a line worth running.

Average price at the most recent North American fur action was $90, top hide $360.  Not discouraging hunting and trapping, just some reality.  Hunt on and support groups adding $ to the process.

What happened to wolf pelts! I just looked it up and your right. Average of $180. Still though, might not make a profit but a nonresident that gets successful can recover a lot of the cost of the trip. Coyotes are doing good though. Geez, 93 as an average for pale western furs

Wow, the last hides I heard about brought good money, thanks for the update! I guess if you want to buy some wolf hides now is the time!

If you are looking for wolves I had a pack howling at my hounds just east of Stull saddle in the CDA mountains on 9/23. They were on the ridge between the 260 road and the 335 road.  :mgun:
