Title: Simms g4z vs G4 pro
Post by: Commando on October 01, 2017, 08:08:08 AM
I would like to get one of these waders. Anyone offer any feedback on them? Is the zipper worth getting or should I save the $100 and get the G4 pros without the zipper? Thanks

I purchased some new simms last year and when I was shopping around I asked a reputable local guide about the simms with zippers because I thought it would a nice feature.  He strongly steared me away from zippers.  He stated he has seen issues with the zippers leaking and if you spend alot of days in the water your just adding to the possibility of getting wet.  He said if you have to pee every ten minutes its nice but besides that its not worth the risk

That's pretty much my opinion as well. Especially if you do a lot of sitting in a drift boat or raft. The endless bunching of that area I think wears the zipper out faster.

If you just walk and wade, or stand in a sled, theres less chance of them wearing out, but it's still a weak point, bound to fail at the worst possible moment.

I have the G4 Pros, have had them for 4 years now, have had zero issues. I doubt I'll ever get a zippered pair.

I have the zipper waders and they have never leaked. Also how often are you really deeper than your waist? I'm next to never that deep, only on some stupid river crossing but like I said they have been great. All that being said I don't remember the last time I actually used the zipper! Haha

Sounds like the non zip is the way to go. As of right now I don't use a boat all that much since I don't have a drift boat so I'm mostly stuck to the bank. I normally don't go that much over my waste. Just yesterday I stood waists deep mostly all day salmon fishing. Think I'll go the pro way. Thanks guys

I am not sure which guide you spoke to, but all the fly fishing guides here have the zippers. They are here at quality and Simms stands by their work. The zipper makes pissing 100 times easier. Frankly, you aren't going to wear them as often as a guide.

What about the G3 vs the G4? Think the G4 is worth the extra 200 dollars? I don't fish as much as a lot of guys, I only get out on the weekends and only a hand full of days a year.

They will probably last you dang near forever then. I don't use mine near what I used to, but my first pair I had for 3 years and I was fishing 100+ days a year in them. Nothing wrong with G3's, they are great waders. The G4's are just that much more durable, and their suspension system is much more comfortable.
