Title: Racoons killing chickens
Post by: dscubame on October 04, 2017, 07:09:41 AM
Would anyone have any recommendations on which pellet gun to purchase for when I catch these raccoons killing my chickens again?  .22 even with subsonic is a little loud and I am fairly sure I am within a no shooting area, arrows pass through and get lost.

google powderless 22lr
they are quieter than a pellet gun and work nice for small game.

Sweet and thank you!!  I am all over this.  Question - States NOT FOR SEMI AUTO.  So I will just single shot and hand cycle the Ruger 10/22 is that correct thinking?

Cool thread, thanks.  Those look like they may be great for grouse as well.

I think this calls for a new .22 rifle. Lever or Bolt  ;)

I'm thinking the neighborhood Turkey's should be nervous as well.

I did some research and it looks like they have a tendency to stick in rifle barrels.  Be careful if you go that route.

If you catch them later in the season, I'd be happy to put the fur up for you....if you wanted to get them tanned?

I'm assuming you are catching them in a cage trap, if so just drown them in a trash can or water tank.

I'll take you up on that as I do have a cage trap.  Would November work or December?  What's your advice on time to trap and I can be very patient.  Thanks Machias.

CB shorts are quiet as well.  However, be careful with any reduced load .22, go for chest shots as it is highly likely that you will not penetrate a skull with them.  My wife flattened four slugs on one's skull in a trap once, and those were full power rounds.

Don't forget blunts for your arrow.  A solid hit and it will not go far.

Everyday for almost two weeks the feeder would be tipped over and empty inthe morning.  I searched the yard and found a spot that looked suspicious.  Made a snare. In the morning I had a coon. Yes I know you canít do that.  It was released as I had to go to work.  Next morning I caught it in a live trap next to the coop
With tuna as bait.

The only good raccoon is a dead one, or two, or three... from last night.  I did put two bb's through the rear curtain of my boat though.   :(  I would have had more, but I thought the three sets of eyes in a tree might have been owls as I had been hearing one around the house.

December they will be nice and prime, more than happy to help!

I wouldn't get a pellet gun. The decent ones are expensive and still weak compared to a 22.

Just keep a junk arrow with a cheap broadhead handy and bait them in an area with soft dirt.

A good dog will solve all your problems possibly.  Shotgun works too. :chuckle:

Purchased a box of the Colibri powderless 500 fps or so and as Stein pointed out there were concerns over the bullet exiting the barrel of a long gun.

A well used 20 year old Ruger 10/22 with 10 rounds of Colibri, no issues exiting the barrel.  You do have to self cycle.  The sound level is like crushing a soda can.

Ineffective on squirrel at 20 and 30 yards therefore it is not going to be a raccoon solution here.

Highly inaccurate.

No squirrels were harmed in this test and good for them as so far I have found them harmless in the yard.  I bet a few are a little sore about now however.

You can live trap year round if the raccoons are killing livestock. trap them and take them somewhere and let them loose or shoot them

It is illegal to move them from the property while alive.  It is also a jackwagon thing to do to the people in the area where they are moved to.

Funny, they don't seem to care about my dog (even has a doggy door), in fact, they seem to mere interested in her empty food dish than the chickens.

Ever seen a dog after a fight with a pack of raccoons? It ain't purty and you can lose a good dog. Those raccoon packs normally will stand their ground when caught in the act of depredation. I lost a great hunting dog that way that decided to take on a raccoon when I wasn't around to stop it. What a dog! Survived two porcupine fights and a skunk before the raccoon hurt him so badly that he had to be put down. Don't ever sic your dog on a raccoon and don't forget that raccoons are sometimes infected with rabies.
