Title: Selway zone Idaho elk
Post by: Duckslayer89 on December 09, 2017, 02:31:48 AM
I know 10a pretty well in Idaho but want to branch out this year for elk season. Something more remote and back country. I've been up the old Darby road 25+ miles before turning around from elk city and we got a bear. Has anyone hunted out there for elk? My dad and brother have been talking about doing a drop camp since my brother finished his masters degree. Anyhow just trying to find new ideas for this year with new adventures

Talked to several camps up near the summit pass and elk were very sparse up there.  Saw a few tracks but nothing to make me want to camp there.  The couple trailheads that looked good on the map had a half dozen horse trails camped on em.  Drove first 50 miles on that nez pierce trail / montana road but ended up getting elk elsewhere.

Dang I would not want to tow a trailer up that Darby road! It's so rough and steep. Was that the same trail you are talking about out of elk city? I didn't see any deer or elk when we drove up that day but it was early October.

Yea south of Elk City 15 miles by Red River Ranger Station.  110 miles estimated travel time 10 hours  :yike:.  Yea it would be even slower with horse trailers but they do it - old timers who just keep doing it even though the elk are pretty much gone  :dunno:

I always wondered what the country was like further up the road. We turned around near that super steep rock face but never drove up to look at it. Lots of blue grouse.
