Title: Any report on Roosevelt?
Post by: Lingcod on December 15, 2017, 03:37:48 PM
Anyone been out to Roosevelt lately? How has the fishing been? How are the launches? I'm headed out that way tomorrow to give it a go, but I'm hoping to see some hot reports to keep my spirits up while I'm white knuckling the drive out there.

Anyone know anything about whitefish on the LR?

I've never fished from a boat for them, only bank fishing the rivers during winter months.

Ramps up north (Fort Spokane, Hunters) are good but I’m seeing few fishermen out. I haven’t gone down myself lately but one of the neighbors says trout fishing is great, walleyes not so great.

I went out with a walleye tournament fisherman a few years ago--in Lake Roosevelt-- and found big schools of fish suspended in about 60 ft. of water. He put  an underwater camera down to check to see if they were walleye. They were whitefish....big Lake Superior whitefish not the Rocky Mountain like you catch in the rivers. Never tried for them but I bet they would hit a Swedish pimple with a fish eye on the hook. We would catch them in Soda Lake over by O'Sullivan through the ice on 'pimples. They get up to 6 pounds.

I normally use a hot pink glo hook and a white maggot, small hook for "whitefish gear rules" on the smaller rivers with those rules.
Having trouble sourcing maggots locally, so I bought some Berkeley Gulp fake ones.  Not sure if they'll work  :dunno:

"Whitefish gear rules" means terminal fishing gear is restricted to one single hook, maximum hook size three-sixteenths inch point to shank (hook size 14), and bait is allowed. All species: Release all fish except whitefish.

Been having some pretty good success lately the last couple times out. The bite has been really active. Think the colder temps have helped kick things in gear. Just been bottom fishing from shore. On average they're 15-20" with the bigger ones strong healthy fish. I have caught a couple redbands as well that went back.

Is Lake Roosevelt shut down?  Trump sent out requests that park managers use carry forward funding to keep parks and whatnot open, but it seems to be at the discretion of local managers.

This could effect the Dam crossing on the snake as well.

19 inches, funny i was talking with a guy about 30 yrds away from me,seen a fish jump.and thought maybe i hooked a fish,,,i did but he took my rod and left,i see the trail  down the sand into the lake and a trail through the silt into the abyss, lol .so i threw my other line out and got lucky and caught my other line..reeled in the line pulled up the rod.i had to clean the reel so it would work, and all that i still had the fish..pretty cool...good  thing that was my wife's rod

I am very curious on this one, too. Roosevelt is a 100 mile one way drive for me and to drive along way and being unable to fish...

Well done rasbo! A friend and I spent over 6 hours with about 25 other anglers at Ft. Spokane...ZERO FISH & ZERO BITES. WEIRD...A lot of anglers for mid-week and everyone reported similar results. The beautiful Blue Moon may have been a factor.

Burbot fishing this season has been slowed by the dirty water, but we have located the walleye and have been getting limits of those for our customers
