Title: Bow cant
Post by: AWS on December 17, 2017, 09:42:29 AM
I was a bow hunter from 1956 well into the 1970's, shooting longbows and recurves no sights.  If you had to shoot under something you could kneel down and cant the bow almost to horizontal and still be reasonably sure of a hit.  I just got back into this and am finding using a compound with sights on it even the slightest cant will throw the group away from the aiming point.  Is this common or am I doing something wrong.  I plan to use the bow for stalking small game and called coyotes in tight cover.  Would I be better off removing the sight and getting back to shooting instinctively.

Just get used to using the level on your sight, or get yourself one. With repetition and good anchor point you won't have to look at it anymore after you get your form down. That was my experience anyways, but I am by no means an expert. With your pins being on a vertical axis the farther you're shooting the more cant will affect it. But if you're only hunting yotes and small game, instinctive may be a better bet anyways.

Yes, canting your compound will throw off your groups. Most sights now days have a built in level so you can see if your canting the bow or not. Keep it level!

After reading your post and understanding that you WANT to cant the bow in certain situations, scrap the idea of a level.

You will not be able to cant a compound bow and use a sight.  You will have to experiment shooting by without the sight to see if you can hit your targets while canting.

If your shooting at short yardage use a recurve. If you want repeatable accuracy use sights and a range finder. The term level really does not apply to archery. You want to hold the bow plumb,Thats what the bubble on the sight is showing.

Canting the bow does not effect the groups. It effects where they hit. Still very capable of great groups as long as you are consistent. Canting is very helpful in the wind and on a slope. Canting into the hill or into the wind will allow you to continue aiming exactly where you want to hit. That being said all of that is easier done with a good level on your sight. Dont forget about 3rd axis. The relationship between your bow and sight being 90 Deg. If it is not you will shoot right or left depending on whether you are shooting uphill or downhill.

Thanks everyone.

I have a recurve but added a compound to the mix for coyotes so I can draw it when I first see the coyote and hold it until he moves in close enough for the shot.
