Title: Looking for a little assistance with chukar and quail.?.
Post by: Rowdy on October 29, 2007, 02:36:47 PM
Well I'm new to the game and in need of some assistance.  I have a 9 month old pup and I've been attempting to put him on birds every weekend since Sept (Grouse, Chukar, Pheasant, Quail) with limited success.  Chukar and Quail are new to me but after venturing out I can see why they are so fun to hunt.  So far I've spent all my time in L.T. Murray and the pup and I have flushed two small covies of chukar, one covey of quail during four trips.  I'm mainly wondering if anyone can offer some advice that might better my chances.

DISCLAIMER:  I am not trying to acquire anyones honey holes or looking for anything on a silver platter.  I understand the process in which people obtain such wonderful resources, Busting their butt exploring.  I am attempting to do this but I'm getting a little frustrated.  A nudge in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!

I'm looking forward to being part of the forum.

Thanks,
Jake

Have pup, will travel.  I'm trying get my pup and myself as much experience as possible.  Living on the westside doesn't give us many bird opportunities.

Thanks,
Jake

Based on the posts I've been reading on here the central part of the state is doing better than the East.  Yakima canyon for chukars, etc.

If you have a pup you may be just better off investing some of your time and money in a game farm hunt.  Not my 1st or even 2nd choice but unbeatable for bustin birds over a young dog.

I'm kinda resigning myself to doing just that....  my dog just turned 3 and I really can't afford to shoot just a handful of birds over him without slowing is development.

Yakima Reservation is as good a public hunt as you are going to find in this State.  Anywhere around Harrah is good habitat for pheasont and quail.  Good maps when you buy the reservation permit.  Areas around the Yakima River are all pretty good.  Later is the season, the tougher the hunt.
