I am not much of a bird hunter, and if I am hunting them, its usually with a 100 grain judo.
I got a single shot break barrel 20 guage the other day for grouse, I wanna head out tomorrow for a walk...
what loads do you guys use for the grouse.
Thanks in advance.

4 steel works good for grouse in the 20 :dunno:

6 shot in lead has worked well for me

6 shot in lead has worked well for me
nickle plated lead #6's is my favorite stuff for birds..hits like a hammer.
-
Roger guys, thanks.
-
Basically any pheasant load.
-
An ounce of lead 6's.
7 1/2's will work too if your shots aren't too far, especially if your only hunting ruffed grouse and not blues.
-
thanks all. I bought two boxes of 6, that should keep me going for a bit.
-
I use 6 or 7 1/2

I am going to be using 3in #4 steel for my 20 gauge. Was very difficult to find in Washington, most of the shelves are bare of the steel shot in 3in shells. I dug for 30 minutes and found 3 boxes of Federal Premium and 1 box of Winchester Xpert.

1 ounce of #6 with max dram is my all time favorite grouse load.

I've never tried the nickel plated. Is it easy to find in the stores?
-
Most of the American nickel or copper plated isn't really going to make any difference in the field. It is washed, not plated as I understand it. The bigger question is the softness of the lead. In most cases you get what you pay for. $10 box better than $4 promos. With grouse there is a deminishing return though. Any 6's should do fine.
God Bless,

just about any 20 gauge load will work just fine.

I want to try a .410 for grouse.

if you can get the buggers to sit still i bet it'd work great!
i'm sure that every one i see when i have my shotgun will just sit there on the ground and stare at me, but if i bring my .22 they'll all flush! :P
