Title: Brownell's GUN-KOTE Oven Cure Gun Finish
Post by: Jekemi on June 02, 2010, 10:47:57 AM
I noticed on our site that the Brownells GUN-KOTE Oven Cure Gun Finish has been discussed. Anyone used this product? I'd like to know more about it and perhaps try it out on an older rifle just to see how it works. The stuff is sprayed on a warm gun (happiness is a warm gun) then baked in the oven for 1 hour at 300 degrees F. Supposed to be rock solid. The only way to get it off is to sandblast it. For $19 bucks it sounds too good to resist???

I am curious as well. Especially if it would make a dull coat. I may need a bigger oven, may have to use the grill instead to get a barrel done.

I have seen a gun finished in this way. It's almost too good to be true.

I have never done this myself but I've followed threads on other gun websites cause I was interested also.  Several of the guys chimed in and said that your wife is probably going to hate you afterwords because of the lingering smell, apparently it can be pretty strong.  I've thought about trying it in the machine shop bearing oven we have here at work but they frown on firearm components being brought in.

Keep us posted, I'd like to try it sometime, maybe I'll wait until the wife leaves for the weekend......

I use Gun-Kote on most of the builds that I do for customers.  Prep work is the key to getting the results that they claim.  Blasting, degreasing all comes into play.  I built a special oven that allows up to a 36" barreled action to be done.  Use an airbrush to apply the finish.  Follow the instructions to the letter, and it is an awesome finish.  I have several customers in Alaska that I have built rifles for that leave them on their boats.  No rust or corrosion at all.  Definitely a must here in the Northwest for sure.

A side note, I bake them at 350 degrees for 1hr 15min.  This gives a harder more durable finish from what I have experienced.

So, given the Hunt-WA comments, the various pieces of research out there, and the advertising claims by GUN-KOTE I'm going to buy a can and try it out on an older gun as a trial. I have a WhirlPool Big Easy electric oven, which is plenty long enough for my Weatherby, AK, Remington 870, and my Weatherby SA08 shotgun. The only gun that won't fit is the Mosin Negant.

I think I'll try it on the 870 first and let you all know how it works. I can't sandblast it so I'll use some Xylene solvent to super-clean it. Let it dry, hang it using coat hanger wire from the top oven rack. I can keep the barrel attached to the receiver, action closed. With the but stock and forestock removed it just fits. Wish me luck.

I would be very interested to see how it turns out.

Www.southridgearms.net (http://Www.southridgearms.net) he's in Orting and all he does is finish guns. Gun Kote is awesome but like said it's all about the prep, sandblast with 220 grit aluminum oxide, degrease etc. For what Dave charges he can do far better than someone fiddling around their first time and he has a custom oven. Whatever you do don't use DuraCoat that stuffs garbage.

Seems to me if a guy has the means and the patience it would be well worth taking on a gunkote project yourself. Can of gunkote... $18.95. Paying someone to do it for you on a long rifle... $185.00. Just saying, that's a pretty good profit. :twocents:

Sure if you have a sandblaster & oven big enough. If you don't sandblast it it'll look like garbage & peel. Also you can't lay it in your over, it must be hung, your typical household oven isn't going to work too well.

I used this product on myThompson Center Encore SS, broke it down trigger mech and all, blasted it, sprayed it an hung it in the the wifes oven with little metal hooks fron tie wire, came out amazing, tuff, durable, and looks great.  Like said before take your time and do it right to the letter. WARNING your metals will looks so good you'll want to buy a new stock, then a new scope, and then do the rest of your guns. Cheap, dont pay for someone else to do this work its simple. ;)
