Henry Jackson Wilderness Question
« on: August 20, 2008, 04:36:28 PM »
I have a question about a specific area on the west side of the H. M. Jackson Wilderness.  I'm basically just going to ask if anyone knows if there are animals in the area I'm going to hike in to.  I am hoping someone who has hunted up there will PM me so I can ask about this specific area.  If you are planning on going up that direction for this years high hunt, you may or may not wish to help.  If you are, you might want to respond just to find out where I'm thinking of hunting.  Anyways, any help would be appriciated.  Thanks!!!

I myself have seen very few deer in that area.  I once sat for three days up there in the pouring rain and didn't see one bear nor one deer.  If I were going to hunt a wilderness area, it would either be the Buckhorn or the Sinhaleikin (sp?).  Good luck.

hiked about 4 miles of ridgeline and glassed many a meadow, not a single dow nor buck. I posted some pics in the bear forum.... kind of strange I saw WAY more deer activity up right outside of bellingham then in the backcountry. Also, the huckleberry crop is apparently a major failure this year, I did not see a single one not sure if that effects deer or just bear?

Thanks for the info guys.  I went up a trail this weekend and didn't see any deer.  It was only a day hike though, so I spent most the day hiking, not spotting.  I saw quite a few mountain goats and 2 bear once up in the high country.  My question is, if you were on the west side of the wilderness accessing it from the mountain loop highway, would you expect to see Muleys up there or high mountain blacktail?  Thanks!

The blacktail will be in the old growth forest but muleys will be on the open ridges and some hybrids will also be in the mix at the higher (muley) habitat.
