2012 Whitetail Rut Report
« on: October 28, 2012, 10:59:01 PM »
I just wanted to start a thread for people to provide updates on whitetail rut observations. Things should start heating up over the next few weeks.

Over the past three days I have noticed the bucks have started showing a mild interest in does in 101, 117 and 121. From what I can tell the daylight buck activity has definitely picked up vs the week prior.

So a general rule of of thumb on the eastside what do you think the average "peak" rut is? Nov. 10-19? Earlier?
Aim small, miss small.

As a general rule, the late hunt is pre-rut. Rut usually happening 20th and on. There's no mystery about when the season closes. A decade ago it was open to the 22nd. There's a reason it moved back.

That said some years we get rut starting with a couple days left in the season. Last year for instance.  Many years you'll find bucks staking out near does, just not chasing and pushing them yet.

124 -  last Monday (22nd) I came across the first scrape of the year on my property.  Earliest I've ever seen a scrape, not saying rut will be any earlier just stating the date.  I setup a game cam and have a basket rack 4 visiting it every night between 1:00-3:00 a.m.

I covered a lot of ground in N. Idaho over this past wknd and no activity; I suspect things will change shortly in that neck if the woods within the next 7-10 days (pre-rut that is).

On Friday my 10 year old son shot a decent 4-point in 124. The bases of his horns  had a lot of sappling bark strips hanging from them. I found several rublines and one that had a brand new scrape along it. My camera had several daytime buck pics as well. None of those bucks were mature but I wasn't getting any day time pics a week ago.

Didn't seem to be starting in 113 when I was there last week.  Was going on hot and heavy last couple of years in the late muzzy season after Thanksgiving.  I'll be hunting the modern season this year, Nov. 10-19, so we'll see...  :dunno:
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Bernie Madoff did it, it's called a "Ponzi Scheme"
When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"

My personal observations over the years have shown a heavy "chase" phase from 20-25 November. I have even witnessed does being bred during that timeframe. That being said, every fawn drop I have ever witnessed was right around 1 June (give or take a few days). This would point towards 15 November as being the tending/breeding phase and would ultimately mean you should see chasing in the week or two prior. Looking back at my trail cam photos over the years I see the most daylight monster buck activity between 5-15 November.
