07 youth moose
« on: October 04, 2008, 09:29:40 PM »
Hi my name is Justin I am 13 last year my 2ND year of hunting I was drawn for 1 of the youth tags on Mt Spokane having not taken a big game animal I was not sure what to expect. My dad was very excited can't say as much for my older brother who put in every year since he was 9 and never got drawn but when the time came I could not have done it without him. With info from fellow hunting washington member's we bought a pass to the I.E.P company and made our 1st scouting trip the first weekend in Sept. didn't see any but everyone said Thompson creek was the place to go. so we planned on the next scouting trip but on the Sept 8Th Sept 13Th and Sept 21 all 3 of my grandmother's passed away so anymore scouting was over until the season started. When the first weekend of Oct. came we were ready to go Saturday morning we went up Thompson creek never having been there we drove and glassed the clear cuts finding 2 bull's near the top looked hard but no cow's with them later driving down we ran into a little bull walking down the road and that night watched a nice bull for 15 min. calling for a mate he was 335yds away and just stood there the whole time. The next weekend was opening of deer season and my older brother said it would be OK if we went back instead of going to our cabin in Winthrop for the deer opener Saturday morning Dad said we should go back up to where the first 2 bull's were we seen thinking they were up there for a reason and a cow must be close by and sure enough we spotted a lone cow not 500 yds from where they were the week before. she was in timber and blow down so when we got close my brother and I went left and our dad went to the right hoping to push her back to us if she went that way about 200 yards after splitting up my brother spotted her about 40yds away looking towards dad I could not get a rest in the blow down so my brother turned around and I used his shoulder. I don't think she ever seen use and when she turned back to the left I pulled the trigger dropping her in her tracks when my brother turned back he asked where she went and I said straight down! It was the first animal I have taken. We had about 4000 ft of rope with us and a chain saw and were able to drag her out to the road whole where we cleaned and quartered her 5hrs later we were headed back down the hill at the gate we asked tiny if we could hang the quarters by the creek in the shade for the night. Again I would like to thank everyone who helped with info on where to go....JUSTIN

335yds away very nice bull
