First Bobcat!
« on: August 09, 2007, 10:48:39 PM »
I have just got into predator calling..have only done it three times this year...today I went out looking for bear with no luck..but while calling..i got a coyote to come into 50 yards (didnt take the shot)...and even better I got a bobcat to come into 70 yards (range found them both). It was the first bobcat I have ever seen in the wild and truly a gorgeous animal through my binos...I was stoked...was hoping for a cougar to pop out..but no luck...perhaps next time. One things for sure....im hooked on calling predators! Ps...I have GOT to get a better camera...

REALLY cool pictures.
The first bird may get the worm, but it's the second rat that gets the cheese.

I got a shot off with the stick bow the other day and missed my first bobcat!

I called for about 2 hours using the Quaker Boy fawn distress call about every 60 seconds; giving a 3 blow cadence each time. My strategy was to find a low spot in the ground next to a tree stump where I had a good view and shooting angles just about 175 yards from where some older timber and newer forest meets. There I lied on my back (very comfortable) to conceal most of my body with my head propped up on my backpack for a pillow. Not a good position to be in if a cougar came in and I have seen one in this area... I was able to look behind and around me and also call without giving away my position much at all. Thanks to no mosquitoes.

He came right in towards me within the first 5 minutes of calling. It took him about 2 hours to cover 150 yards and then get bold enough to show himself. I had to be very patient as most of that time was taken for him to cover the last 30 yards. I knew generally where he was the whole time as I could hear him stalking his way in. Thanks to almost no wind and silent woods. He popped out from around a tree trunk to my front at about 15 yards. I already had an arrow nocked. So I slowly sat up and shot at the *censored*. My arrow flew over and to the right of him a little bit. Then the bugger darted away towards the new timber. That was *censored*in' fun!

Getting animals to approach you closely is a rush. If I go modern for something again I'll try like hell to do it bow and arrow style. I really like close and silent hunting.

I have a strategy of checking out the deer areas until about 10 am and if there is no action or nothing interesting; then if time permits I do some predator calling.

I keep my B.F.K. right next to me out of the sheath in case a big cat comes in so that if I miss with the arrow I still have something to defend myself with.  :)
