Deer are everywere
« on: August 24, 2007, 05:02:31 PM »
My wife and I just got back home frome a week in north east oregon. There are deer all over the place.I was just wondering what does the oregon dept of game do that our state does not or is unwilling to do wth the deer herds? We stopped in the Lick creek area for a day and found big horn sheep.I never tire of watching them.

Oregon does not have any general rifle seasons for mule deer. It is all by draw only. That could explain it, but to be fair there are places in Washington where you can probably see just as many deer as you saw there, and there are other places in Oregon with a definite lack of deer.  But I'd say in general Oregon probably does have more deer than we do, and besides the fact that they have no general rifle seasons, they also have a lot more mule deer habitat than Wasington does. Much of Washington's historic mule deer habitat has been converted to agricultural uses, where almost nothing can live. Also I don't believe they have quite the problem with tribal hunters killing off all their deer and elk herds in the winter like we do in this state.

I never hear about any other states having the kind of problems with the tribes that WA seems to have.  I wonder why that is too. :dunno:
