Watched a wolf
« on: March 20, 2014, 10:22:07 AM »
For about 25 minutes on the hill across from Carlton, it was circling 6 unaware feeding deer at 25 -100 yards. It had made a complete circle and was closing in when they discovered it, the deer stood facing it, there was a stand off for 5 minutes then he wondered on around the hill and over the top.

Not sure what Biggers road is, unless that's the drive to the Davis Place, if so then probably yes.

If the Lookout pack is always up the Twisp/Carlton/... area,
Which pack do all the wolves above Volsted and the Tripod area belong too...

That's what everyone has to understand is wdfw says the lookout pass is the same as saying the clockum elk herd! That takes a broad area and several groups!

Those must be the busiest two wolves.  How do they find time to eat and sleep with all their appearances?

So the singe wolf you just watched can't be part of a larger pack??  I'm not sure I understand this 'argument'.  A sighting within a wolf pack range should generally be attributed to the pack that occupies said range.  They don't always stay together as a single group.  Seeing a single wolf watching deer should be evidence enough for that.

The joke is because Fitkin announced the Lookout pack was down to two animals.   Yet they are here there and everywhere.  and there is only one pack in the Valley.

Oh- I see.  How many packs do you think are in the area?  I would guess it could hold a couple, but I'm not super familiar with that country.  A couple of the packs up here are splintered out all over the place right now, but will likely start hanging closer to the den sites before too long.

Are you talking about the Okanogan county or the Methow Valley? If you are talking about Okanogan county, there is a whole list of wolf packs. In the Methow as of this date there are four known packs, a bit of a drop in the last few years>plus the lookout pack. Funny how wolf packs decline over and area, maybe thats why there is such a huge reward from WDFW's friends  ;)

The highway crosses the river in Carlton :chuckle: was it east of the highway or west? :chuckle:

That wolf was probably just scoping the hillside out waiting for the Thurlows to put their cattle back up there.  That's where they killed a calf last Spring.  I believe Fitkin was in pretty strong denial about that one too.

:yeah:   And the wolves I've watched spend a lot of time just harassing the deer, kind of herd them around just for fun, nobody ever thinks how much stress that puts on the deer.

Wow, that Lookout Pack is pretty talented, last year they scarfed a calve by Davis Lake and hit on a dog in Twisp in the week and the two were seen up the 200 RD above Volsted.

The must be masters of disguise as well, they seem to change appearance at will, LOL

Just watched two light color wolves come out of the canyon from Larson’s and travel north the length of the big field to the spring then go down into the brush behind that guys house.  They spooked a small bunch of deer but didn’t seem interested, it was like they had a destination. I’m sure they bedded down in the cooler place, there’s no birds around so doubt they have a kill in there.

I talk to a guy today who said he saw five wolves above the golf course up Bear Cr Yesterday morning. Two of them had collars, I wonder if WDFW are monitoring these wolves. Could you find out for us Wacoyote?

Fun entertainment.   They stand out pretty good once that hill starts to green.  I drove 7 hours for soccer today.  WISH it was to photograph scungy predators.

I talk to some very reliable people in Twisp this morning, they said there are two wolves that are coming into the orchard behind Hanks Market in Twisp. I wonder if these are the same two that tried to get a little dog to submit?

Reminds me of when the "hippy girls" working for the USFWS and WDFW released wolves in two areas of Alder Cr back in 09. The wolves were seen several times in the orchard and Twisp. Do you suppose the "hippy girls" are back at it this spring?

WDFW's  property is just above the golf course, wondering if they are returning to where they were released from??

Last meal they had maybe!??
