Yorketransport,

Did you get your Terrapin yet and if so, how do you like it?  I'll go wayyyy out on a limb and say you're probably AMAZED at what they are capable of.

Two grand is certainly nothing to be taken lightly but when it comes to rangefinders that are capable of above and beyond, nothing really compares to the Terrapin, except a bigger badder better Vectronix rangefinder.

I know people that have the more expensive plrf 10, that either wish they had the Terrapin or sold their plrf10's and bought the Terrapin because the Terrapin would outrange their 10's.  Maybe Vectronix did a little to good of a job with the Terrapin and it was hurting the sales of their much more expensive 10's and 15's which lead to them discontinuing the Terrapin.

My pops bought a G7 a few months ago and I begged him to get the Terrapin instead but he was enticed by the bells and whistles of the G7 and bought it instead.  Certainly nothing wrong with the G7, it's a great unit and for strictly hunting purposes, it likely, could be argued it's the better choice but as a rangefinder, the Terrapin is capable of double the distance.

I did get the Terrapin, and it's everything I hoped it would be!

We can get an average max range of  just over 2500 yards in mid day conditions. Under ideal conditions 3500 is pretty easy. The best reading I've had so far has been over 4300 yards! The worst performance it's given was on a foggy, misty day. Even then we were getting over 1500 yards.

I can't think of any reason I would have needed the plrf 10 other than just to say that I have it. The Terrapin will range beyond the capabilities of anything I will likely own. Besides, it's hard enough to find a spot to shoot 1500 yards let alone 2500 that the Terrapin will range.

The only real issue I have with it are the 5x magnification. 10x would have been better, just so that it matches a pair of binos. The other problem is that everybody wants to borrow it all the time! I'm thinking of offering ranging services for a small fee. :chuckle:

York

I've heard of people making some sort of adapter and using the Swaro doubler on them.  I know Shawn Carlock w/Defensive Edge made an adapter so he could put the Swaro Doubler on his plrf10.

Like I said earlier, my dad recently bought a G7 and there is things it can do that he Terrapin can not but considering the range and the fact that it can VERY accurately range at crazy far distances, I think he would have gotten more enjoyment from the Shooter App. on his IPhone and the Terrapin.  Heck, half the fun of having a Terrapin is seeing how far they will range stuff.  ;)

I have the Leica Geovid. It is great. That being said I cannot get a range over 1338 yds. I bought th Vectronix Terrapin. So far 4800 yds is the fartest. Great unit .Works well in low light ,rain and fog.Well worth the investment.

I talked to euro optics today and they said they are discounting the Terrapin. I don't know why it sounds like a great range finder.

I talked to them when I bought mine. They were the people who told me to buy the first one I could find in stock. It sounds like Vectronix is just phasing out the Terrapin (plrf 05) in favor of the higher powered plrf 10.

If anyone is looking for a Terrapin, Potomac River Group is where I got mine. It was about $2K shipped (priority over night I might add ) They're pricey to say the least, but nothing else compares as far as pure ranging ability until you get into the $4K price range. If don't need  1500+ yard ranging capabilities then there are others that will work well in addition to providing angle solutions and true ballistic range

for just range, these sound great but if you want more, one that calculates TBR or BDC eliminates alot of other very critical calculations at extreme range. some will tell you wind hold over based on all your actual conditions with you just needing to know the wind speed. at 1000 yds, this can result in the difference right or left in Minutes OA.

If ya got the cash, Vectronix all the way.  PLRF's will not let you down.  If you want to hit the golden 1760 mark there is no better to get you there, daily.  Wish I had a 15 or even a 10.

Save some money over the Vectronix. Get a G7 BR2. $1500 but it's a RF, a Kestrel and a PDA ballistic calculator in one. Very accurate readings capable of 2500+ yards.

$1400 for 1500 yards isn't a great deal. My $800 Leica will do 1500 yards (it's done over 2000 on occasion.)

If you want something further than 1500 yards consistently, you need the Vectronix or something similar.

If you want something further than 1500 yards consistently, you need the Vectronix or something similar.

Your Leica doesn't measure and calculate for the current atmospheric conditions, allow you to enter your ballistics specific to your caliber $ load, then telling you how to dial your scope, either.

That's why the BR2 is $1400. Take your $800 Leica, add $250 for a kestrel, and another few hundred for a PDA handheld ballistics program and you can have one unit that does it all for you.

I give you the BR2.

How about $800 for the Leica, $80 for a basic Kestral (you really don't need all the extra stuff on the top end models) and a $10 app for your phone? I'm still looking at only $900.

Now take the BR2 with all of the bells and whistles for $1400. That's an extra $500 over the Leica to have all of your equipment in one unit. So now when your batteries die, you are out a rangefinder, ballistic calculator, and weather station. And you still can't range past 1500 yards consistently in less than ideal conditions.

I'll go ahead and take the Terrapin plus $90 worth of other equipment and range out past 3000 yards easily. We run my Vectronix side by side with a Leica and the two are dead even until you start to get up around 1500 in less than perfect conditions. I can honestly say that in order to range past 1500 in mediocre conditions, there isn't much out there that can keep up with the Vectronix products. It's a shame that they discontinued the Terrapin. I'm just happy that I broke down and bought mine when I did.
