As daylight broke, there were 8 birds gobbling.  Pretty sure it was 5 gobblers and 3 jakes.  It was a quick hunt, but kind of odd.  I had three gobblers close enough that I could hear drumming, but they would not commit to coming in.  They kept flying back and forth across the bottom, from hill to hill.  They gobbled good for about an hour, then it went silent. Suddenly, one gobbled at a hen cutting. I look up and 9 hens are flying at me!  They land about 30 yards out and are unsure about the decoys.  I though the jig was up, but they calmed down, and began feeding.

In the back of the opening, I see a gobbler emerge from the creek, about 90 yards away.  He completely skirts me to join some of the hens.  Then, two more gobblers and a jake come out and come toward me, once they come around a fallen tree, they bum rush my jake decoy and send him flying!  I let them beat on him a bit, and finally this one gets clear from his buddies.

Winchester 3 1/2 XX 6's at 20 yards did the trick!

It was a cool bonus to see a second beard!  This is my first multi bearded bird!

Mid day bird first one with a scatter gun in awhile for me. Felt weird not having my bow with me.

Didn't start hunting until about 8:45 in the Mt. Spokane unit.
Blew the first two setups (my brother is loud).
The third setup paid off. This guy came in from over a quarter mile away.
Four hens within five yards did a beeline toward him. Some light calling about fifteen minutes later got him to within about 200 yards. The last calling I did got him turned and fanning - he also saw the funky chicken decoy and I swear he cocked his  head in surprise. He nearly came in on a rope to meet the deke, but I interrupted there meeting.
19.2 lbs., 8" beard, 1" spurs.
Scoring on the opener is fun, but it doesn't always happen.

Hope you guys don't mind me posting some photos of my Oregon bird I killed this morning.  Love seeing all those big ole Merriam's!!!

Heard a bird gobbling at daylight on a distant ridge, so off I went. After crossing the creek and getting back on top, I heard the tom gobbling on his own below me. I closed the distance and bumped some deer, so I decided to find a good set up to call from. I let out a series of yelps and tossed in a few cutts, he replied with a double gobble.  :) Maybe 90 seconds later I could see his fan, and as he disappeared behind some manzanita brush I heard him spittin & drumming all the way to 20 yds where I said "hey you" to get him out of strut. BOOM
