Which decoys
« on: September 04, 2007, 07:03:53 PM »
I was planning on buying a couple dozen new duck decoys and was wondering what brands you guys prefer.  Also what are your thoughts as to size, regular vs. magnum.  I was planning on getting the GreenHead Gear in regular size.  Any help would be appreciated

Super magnums with aqua keels or weighted keels if weight isn't an issue... I have over 12 dozen standards and 3 dozen super magnums...  Super magnums are just plain better, they can be seen from quite a bit further away and it appears as though incoming ducks sometime get screwed up with the relative size as they tend to come in closer.  nothing scientific... all anectdotal.

I'll take quality decoys over quantity any day.  I'd rather hunt over 12 Columbia River's than 12 dozen plastics....  But you've got to be prepared for everything, I've got my GHG life size mallards and some cheap Flambeaus from Bi Mart that see just as much use and blood.  I try to pack at least 8 drakes per dozen just to have a little more visibility.

How deep your pockets are and weight is a big issue. I like the to carry in the liter water keel decoys that gives me less choices but I'm hunting back waters from canals, ponds,or lakes not large bodies of water. I hunt on foot and I'll save the extra weight for other gear, float tube, walking stick, phone, radio, and gps.I hunt mostly a lone.

What ever decoys you get do not get the GreenHead Gear
Potholes Decoy Bag. Unless you do not intend on carrying it around. The strap are so high the bottom of the bag hits the back or your legs every darn step you take. It's so cheap it should be outlawed. It was my first bag and I didn't know they all weren't that way. Good thing I never clamed to be bright

As far as deke bags go, I used to buy cheapo bags and use a pack frame. It was a great way to pack dekes. Now I use 12 slot bags for ALL my dekes. FB's, shells, and even floaters. It really helps add years and PAINT to your dekes...

Cheap dekes, bags, shells, and anyother so called deals are still on my list of good things to try. I leave bags of yardsale decoys scattered in the dune area all season in cattails and sagebrush, if they're gone no big thing. If we had every newbie thinking he has to have the best of everything most like me would have never got started.
Now that I don't intend to return to work after 37+ years at the same job I'll have to learn to think cheap again. I'm glad I did spend the money and  bought some good stuff before  :)
I've made up my mind I'm going to have fun if I have to use a single shot,Kents, and the old carry lites
Let me just add aint nothing wrong with my good stuff 8)

Miles I hear ya. I leave mine hoping it's gone the next time I go back to that spot. It's quit a ways in and have to smile everytime I think about someone taking it with dekes. I bet they're not as dumb as me and they throw it away before they get to the truck. I haven't used my decoy cart enough to say it's good but I do like the jet sled from Cabelas on ice and snow
It pulls easy, everything, including waders and coat will fit in it,and it was on sale.  :)

Sears Tent and Awning in yakima makes the best decoy carriers around.  12 slot poncho's for $37.  The XL poncho holds a dozen mags and it's no problem packing one on top of the other to pack two dozen, plus they pockets work well to hold water bottles, shells, calls and even birds on the way out.  No tangled lines, no scratched paint.  And best of all easy on the shoulders.

South First street, north of Nob Hill.  Chinook Sporting goods used to be right next door.

Nothing fancy here, driftwood is free. If you got the time, you can turn out a nice spread to be proud of.

Perfect the fundamentals of duck hunting and it won’t matter which decoys you use.  A good hunter will get birds over decoys that don’t seem much to you.  The best looking decoys you can buy, decoy the hunter into a purchase.
