Pee out of the tree stand?
« on: August 01, 2014, 07:02:26 AM »
I'm going to be using my climber stand this year for bear. I'll be out tomorrow afternoon to sit for the evening and have been trying to decide whether or not to bring a pee jug or not. I've read that a lot of white tail hunters will pee from their stands or pee in mock scrapes but for bear I'm wondering if I should just play it safe and bring a bottle.

So what do you say...bottle it or let it fly?

Though I have pee'd in front of tcams and had bears come sniff, I wouldn't do it out of a stand while hunting unless I was planning on shooting upwind.

A zipper-lock type of cook-in bag works great and takes up zero space in your pack.

Last year I pee'd out of my tree stand and about 30 minutes later a doe walked right over it and never even slowed up. However, I still dont like the idea of doing it.

Wide mouth Mason jar. Don't have to worry about figuring out how to hit the hole with one.

My solution (and I think this is an original thought, maybe one of the two or three I've had in my entire life): get a Gatorade bottle, put a Mr. Yuck sticker on it, stuff some Kleenex or butt wipe in it. Then when you're up a tree and you have to go wee, just stick your dork in there and "take a waz". Absolutely silent, and as soon as you get the lid on it, absolutely no odor. The Mr. Yuck sticker is mandatory only if you also drink the lemon-lime original blend. Confusion could exist.

A friend who guided for many years in MT told me that human pee doesn't scare ungulates but bears know right away where it comes from.

I know the high rise crane operators use a long hose, seriously they do. All goes in one spot. Shaking might create a backsplash though.......

 :yeah:

I use a zip lock 1 gallon bag in my ground blinds. Works great because there are always other uses for zip lock bags around camp.  Just adjust the opening for your Hoochie Mama. Pack it away from my blind a ways when I leave and dump. You can carry several in your pack for future use.

Thank you for the suggestions everyone.  I'll pick up a gatorade on the way out.

if you got cats fill the Gatorade bottle half full of kitty litter  :chuckle:

I like Gatorade bottles,  they're made to be wizzed in.  The bottles are tough and the lids seal tight.

Agreed, I always figured the designer of the Gatorade bottle had all this in mind ................ or maybe it was just dumb luck. :dunno:

A bottle full of warm pee makes a nice hand warmer too.

I would pee from a stand if I needed . I shot a bear last year that came in with his nose to the ground and stopped to sniff the spot I peed on before getting into my blind.

About 10 years ago I ran a test. For around 2 years straight I had a game cam set up and serviced the cam every few weeks, I peed in front of the cam before leaving each time. I have hundreds of photos of animals coming to that spot and sniffing it, many where squatting and peeing on it. the traffic increased quite a bit.

The pictures were mostly deer bear coyote raccoon squirrel.
Nothing wrong with peeing in a bottle either if that's your thing.

I'm not sure.
