I hear alot of guys having many take downs with few fish landed or broken off. I have fished Bouy 10 every weekend since July 1. We limit an average of 4-6 guys and are rarely fishing past 11-12 am. Use BIGGER HOOKS. I use an 8/0 in the rear and a 7/0 in the front with whole herring. The bigger the bait the better. We have landed fish pushing 30 lbs or better every day. I also use 100 lb test leader. NEVER break 1 off or have them chew thru my leader. I am using the same leaders I started with in July. Salmon are not leader shy in the ocean or the river this time of year.

It is funny you say that as I was going through all my old stuff from AK and bingo - BIG hooks and I do not remember breaking off fish hardly at all as we used 50lb leaders...  I know what I am switching back to for a bit of a challenge to the group on my boat.  We got three boats rallying there this weekend, so will see a comparison of sorts, as yes they have been breaking off quite a few in the past several days...  And I know what they are using for hooks and leaders...

I have opposite results. I like 5/0 BRB on 30 pound line. Easier to half hitch whole herring.

I don't have a problem getting mine to the boat...... I was 3/4 today only fish list had nothing to do with angler.

I've been running 3/0 hooks my whole life. I also run green labels and anchovies. I run them on 30 lb leaders and never had problems landing fish quick. And i have never had a salmon chew through a leader.

If you teach people how to fight fish properly they will not lose as many. The bend is your friend.

I ran 40 last weekend and had one chew through a leader.

WSU that sucks. I wasn't saying it doesn't happen, just stated i have never had one do it.

I do change my leaders after every fish. I don't want to lose a fish and say man i should have changed leaders. I just do it.

I should switch to 50. I saw a guy on one of the other fishing boards that had a fish hit his spinner so hard it snapped his 40lb leader. That would suck.

40 pound is tough to half hitch and roll whole herring 50 is almost impossible.

We fished the B10 challenge today. Took third place if we could have found one more hatchery ho we would have had first.

That guy may want to consider backing his drag off a little or trade in his telephone pole for a fishing rod. There is no way these fish should snap 40lbs. leaders unless he had already caught fish on that leader, if that's the case, he deserved to lose it for being lazy. :twocents:

Nice haul! Those are some good fish! I opted for Willapa on Saturday instead of the buoy 10 thing for the whole weekend. We had fun, lots of chances but only 2 keepers in the box.

First day - Decided to go with old AK ways and Come Get Some approach- went with big hooks (8/0) and heavy leaders (40lb) , we lost zero out of 20+ hooks ups.  Wish the picture showed up, but we went into a flock of birds, had to be 100K of them easy!  Thick dark wall of nothing but birds, diving and feeding, salmon came very easy!!!

Second day- Holy crap they would be pulling line, rod tip diving- grab rod, fish gone...  Pull it up and herring cut in half between hook????  We scratch our limits out of 30 plus takedowns....????

Buddies on river had a rough two days of fishing, we stayed on the salt, got pretty rough on return crossing the bar.......
