Worst season yet, or not lucky... Westside blacktail
« on: September 15, 2014, 06:49:28 AM »
Not having luck this deer season, the wife isn't having fun not seeing anything... Except when we come into our neighborhood 3 deer...

Spent days up in Sultan basin, Monroe.
(Friday)Took the girl to try and get a deer on Whidbey Island, 5am ferry leads up to... Trillium tree farm/area closed to hunting for early archery... Fantastic lol
7am back on a mission to Sultan area, Old owen road -Reiner road: Closed DNR land do to logging
Went back to the basin, no luck.
Saturday am went out to Blewett pass in search of elk and deer, no signs yet. The hunting dates moved up this season, and god awful fires pushed animals away.

Sunday went out all day in the Sultan basin & Plaine area.... Tons of grouse, no deer, talked with numerous people and no body landed a deer....

Off friday and saturday this week, babysitter booked for the kid....
Where to take the wife is the important question?
I-90 Corridor? Back to the Basin? Cedar Ponds? Bill the butcher lol?
In search of black tail on public lands

Oh, you didnt know.  They only come out at night except for 2 weeks of rut.

Sorry, try a different animal.

Okay, kidding, kind of.  They do only come out at night.  If you're looking at clearcuts mid-day, you'd better hope to catch one bedded.  My suggestion, hunting early early morning and right at dusk.  Take a nap during the day or hunt for bears.  You might also have luck walking through the thickest crap you've ever seen as long as there's places to shoot on the sides.  They have a tendency to jump out of the crap and stop to look back.

Good luck, they're tough.

That's my conclusion as well... I leave every morning at 4am from Sultan to Redmond, only see deer at 4am and again about 8pm in the sultan area. (not shooting a resident deer, not hunting neighborhood lol)
I've seen numerous people with photos of deer this season, with successful NIGHT TIME photos.... Few are daylight
I just want the girl to get a deer, she needs that leap of faith to get into big game hunting... Although we did shoot 4 goose, a few days back.

I've just ran into so many bear in the Basin, and seems as if that's the only thing out here. Willing to travel to see deer, as i've put 400 miles of driving in over the weekend.

Just over steavens pass: GMU 245 i've got a buddy who just over there, just passed the rest stop(1 minute from it left hand side)
He's got bear attacking his trash cans, and DNR land behind seen very few deer since moving.
Mule deer 3pt min or antlerless.

So go further east.  There are thousands of acres of public land with whitetail a plenty.  If you're in a 100 series GMU, you're in a spot that holds a lot of deer
