Central Washington University???
« on: September 23, 2014, 01:40:01 AM »
Hello everyone! I've been member on here for quite some time and I know a lot of people don't like the posts asking for help, but here goes! I just arrived at CWU and I am absolutely clueless on the hunting around here. I like mostly all hunting and just looking for general advice? I primarily bear, deer, and upland bird hunt (although I don't have my dog with).

Also, are there any members on here attending CWU and interested in meeting up?

Thank you for anything you can offer.

I think I already briefly talked to you a while back, but the best hunting I've had near campus is grouse and elk. Elk wise basically have to wait until the late season to have a chance in my experience.

I learned to fly fish this summer in Alaska and had a blast. I get my freshwater every year but dont do much fishing. What kind of fish are in the Yakima, trout?

Hi there,

Depending on where you go on the Yakima river, you can catch Rainbow, cutthroat, small mouth, salmon, whitefish, and several other species.  The main species that gets targeted in the canyon and near CWU however is the rainbow.  Drop me a line if you'd like more information on where to go as well at tactics.  Just be mindful, all of the river up in Ellensburg is C&R only, barbless hook, no bait.

Sorry for the late reply. I haven't been on the site lately. Once, the quarter went into full-swing I was pretty busy  :chuckle:

I ended up breaking my foot the same week I put the post up.  After getting off the crutches, I wore the walking cast and hunted pheasants on the Yakima Indian Reservation and made a weekend trip up to the Methow for deer.  The cast made things difficult considering of how far we hiked in.  It was an awesome trip and almost connected with a monster at fading light.  Unfortunately, he never presented a shot through the rocks.  The next morning we packed up camp and hiked back down.  Pretty sure I rebroke my foot doing this, because I couldn't walk the next couple of days.  Things are all healed up now and I have been out coyote hunting a couple of times.  I'm hoping to keep looking for coyotes while finding where the elk and deer may winter so I can shed hunt.

Still looking for any pointers.

I graduated from CWU in 2010 after 5 glorious years there. Literally head any direction from town and you will find one or all of the mentioned above. Shoot me a PM and I can try to point you in the right direction. You will love it over there, so much to do and such beautiful scenery (on campus and in the hills!  :IBCOOL:)

I am a central student as well. No hunting pointers but if you have some time to kill the canyon is always fun to go to and see sheep. I drive through there everyday and see them but today was something else. Well over 100 sheep and all semi close to the river, but no camera with me.  :bash:  :bash:  :bash:

I graduated in 11' actually though about doing a sportsman's club it would be great over there. Between playing for the rugby team and working part time and school I managed to get some hunts in. Mostly bird hunting but tried for big game as well

If you guys get serious about starting up a Sportsman's Club, let me know.  The EWU group is coming over to help with the Ellensburg MDF banquet, and they would be happy to give you some good info, I'm sure.  On that note, some of the local Mule Deer Foundation chapter folks there would probably be good to chat with, too.  Let me know if you'd like to get to one of their meetings coming up, and I'll get you the info.
