Trapperguy22 and Bigshooter's 2014-15 Trapping Season
« on: October 21, 2014, 10:56:37 PM »
Starting to get really excited about trapping.  Gonna hit beaver real hard the first couple weeks of the season so we will have bait later on for mink and cats.  Still need to get a few more mink traps but other than that we are ready.

 I can't wait either. I have been seeing a lot of bobcat while out scouting, and deer hunting. Hoping to get a few this year. Good luck

I just finished a beaver job and I saved all the beaver meat in the freezer so I probably won't do much 'till into December sometime.
Not sure quite what to trap with the predicted prices. Seems like a good year to lay off the beaver but I'd like to catch a few otter so likely that equates to catching beaver. Cat prices aren't to my liking but I'd like to catch a few cats so I'll need those beaver.
Some new traps to test so I have to hit it a little.
Wish I had some rats as that seems like to thing to trap even though I've heard rumors they might be down a little from last year.

Most of the fur I catch this year is going to the tannery.  Rather catch and use them for myself and my family when prices are low.

looks like a pretty good group, just joined it myself and still poking around.   I'd like to keep a lot of my own furs  and I don't know that I want to have them tanned.

It doesn't take much beaver to have a lot of good bait.  That way if you want to sell beaver, you can wait to trap them when they're all primed up in December.

once I get these rabbits producing good I should have a lot of bait around from processing.  Rabbit head/hide wired to the back of a cage ought to work good huh.

reminds me I should run a wire through the head while it's warm then freeze it.

I want to get 50+ mink traps out as soon as I can plus start putting as many beaver carcasses in the freezer as I can for bobcats.  Going to need about 75+ beaver this year.  Last year we were in the 20's for beaver so we are going to have to hit it early and hard weather they are prime or not.

I get it, you're not really concerned with beaver, just solely as a bait source

Am I reading that right? 50+ mink traps? Must be under water sets? Man I'd die of exhaustion in a week if they were dry sets!  :chuckle:

They're dry sets.   :yike:  It's going to be a lot of work.

Mink won't be any good Nov. 1. You should wait until at least Thanksgiving. Mink prices are super low now too. Early caught might be unsaleable. I can't think of anything I would less like to concentrate on.

By the time we are ready to start really getting after the mink i'm sure it will be Thanksgiving.
