Sisu's foundry
« on: September 08, 2007, 07:08:49 PM »
I've been scratching what hair I have left on my head for ideas on weights for all the deeks I bought. Plain lead decoy weights as well as the fancy ACE and Green Head weights area expensive, so I started asking some of the retired folks in and the neighborhood if they had lead. One friend has been battling his wife about bringing his stuff to Good Will and church donations, so he brought me all the lead he has collected in the last year.
I fired up my plumbing torch and melted the lead into small pieces of thin and thick wall conduit with a galvanized fence nail for the tie in spot. I figure these will have to do until I am flush again. :IBCOOL:
Besides doing this makes the hunt ever so special. Like catching a fish on flies you tied, or blasting a critter with reloads you did, etc.

i have taken tire balance weights from work a few times. you have to ladle the steel off of the top once it's melted, but it works.  my neighbor has got a few downrigger balls from that lead. i've heard usually you can either buy it real cheap from tire shops or they'll give it to you.
