My Peaches Tag is punched!
« on: October 28, 2014, 01:44:18 AM »
I just got back from a drop camp in the Norse wilderness for 11 days to try to fill my tag.

I shot a spike in NM a few years back and that was fun, but I have always wanted to pull the trigger on a big bull.

I love back country, and after doing a few exploration hikes in the Norse peak area, It was clear to me that there was no way I would be able to get a  big bull and bring him out without help.  I have also always dreamed of doing a horseback hunt into wilderness so this seemed like a great opportunity to combine the two.  I called up Paul from Chinook Pass Outfitters (http://www.chinookpassoutfitters.com/Pages/default.aspx) and he said he would take me and a buddy in for a long drop camp in an area that held Elk (out of respect for his business I am withholding the area I hunted).

We went in several miles and we saw elk every day we went out.  (torrential rain kept us penned up in our tents for a couple days).

On Thursday I pulled the trigger on a decent 6x6 at 200 yards.

I want to put in a good word for Paul and Chinook Pass outfitters.  He really runs a good show.  28 years with the Yakima Sherriff's dpt.  Dependable.  Checked in on us while we were out there.  Reasonable Rates.  Knows the country.  Put us on Elk.  What else can you ask for?

Now to find a taxidermist around here....

Perfect example of a backcountry rifle hunt, and perfect specimen of a backcountry bull. Nice Job

Congrats Rob, that's a real nice bull and sounds like an awesome adventure.

Thanks everyone, this hunt was the most physically and mentally challenging hunt I have ever been on!

I lost 12 pounds in 11 days!

For all the weather trials and constantly wet tent (propane heater just did not cut it for killing moisture)  I would not have traded it for anything!

Congrats rob!  That looks awesome!  Great bull.
If you are really looking for a taxidermist I would recommend Fidalgo in Anacortes he does great work.  Natures way is another that WILL get some business from me in the future.  Congrats again.

Sweet bull! I'd agree with Fidalgo Taxidermy in Anacortes. I had an elk euro and deer wall pedestal done by them this last year. Super nice people and fantastic workmanship!

Ummm, you must have some VERY high standards if that is only a "decent 6x6" to you. LOL

You Sir are far to modest.  That is a very nice looking head and those are VERY pretty horns.  That will make for a beautiful mount, I'd love to see a pic when it's done.  Just goes to show, hard work and persistence, does pay off.  Well done!!

Nice bull! That looks like a great time! I too love horseback trips into the backcountry. Nothing like it. Paul is a great guy. I've shared some whiskey and campfire with him and everyone had a great time. He's also a phenomenal singer. When I listen to him play it reminds me of my grandfather. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks everyone, I am going with Olympic Taxidermy in North Bend.  He is close and I have a buddy who used him with great results.

Quick Update, I ended up with 234 pounds of boneless meat off this guy, and I scored him at 302.  I'm not really that good at measuring so he could be anywhere from 298 to 306

Side note, this was my first Big Bull so lots of learning opportunities.  The biggest was that you can't carry the head and cape out antlers down while on a steep slope!

Congrats Rob!!  Great bull!  I considered doing the same thing with my Peaches Tag this year.  Hiked to the almost to the head of Crow one day from Raven during a scouting trip.  Just about killed my not-as-young-as-it-use-to-be body!  Sounds like a memorable adventure, well done!

I think I had 6 points.  Might have been 7.  (felt like 12).

willapawapiti, I just saw your thread.  Sounds like an outstanding hunt, I love the idea of the tent to cover yourself with the tent while processing your bull!  Brilliant.

A dry tent is all I can think of!  (I learned that Propane does not drive humidity out...  Next time I bring the wood burning stove to the tent!)  Oh...  Mouse traps.  that would have been a good idea too!  the little hairy boogers pooped all over our stuff and shredded our papertowels!

(small prices to pay though!)

Thanks!

Looks and sounds like you had a great time

Nobody is as much of a character as Paul is. From talking to his mules if they've had a bad day, telling stories, cracking jokes... he is funny and a damn good singer.

I remember years ago at morning coffee with my dad(when there was such a thing at the pit stop in naches), I was 4 and my sister was 7. He was there having coffee and put handcuffs on me and my sister and walked us out to the cop car.  He said "this is where you do not want to be ever in a cop car." I will always remember that.

He recited some cowboy poetry that was pretty dang funny too

the funniest thing he said was about his dog Duke.  duke is a rescue border collie mix who came from an abusive situation.  Duke adores Paul and is suspicious of everyone else.  When I would try to pet Duke he would bark and growl at me with suspicion.

Paul said, "I suppose if he ever bites anyone I'll have to shoot him...  Wouldn't want him to get rabies..."

Took me about a minute to get it!
