Wow that's huge!  Biggest I've heard of taken over here was 42". I thought that was big. Was that taken near his place?

No, pass between west side and east side. Couple hundred miles from his place.

Nope, it was on the wet side
I've slowed down enough in my old age to finally let the game catch up to me

I guess the 42" cat taken up by deer lake is still the biggest I've heard of from this area.   wish I could have seen it in person.

Couple more pics from today. Remade a set that I put out the first week. Snare cubby. Been thinking about it and once you add bait to a set animals go on full alert and don't barge in with the gusto I like them to on a snare. My best snare sets are blind trail sets. Still left two side entrances to the bait snared but opened up the front. Other is a new dirt hole in that same area. It's just off the trail at a spot three trails meet!

Checked a set tonight and found a squirrel in a #3 Northwoods frozen stiff lol. Took him out reset the trap and shoved him in the dirt hole. Cool looking set now!

Fun, but tense night on my cat line. Finally snowing pretty heavy today. No cats or marten. Had a marten eat a bird out of a trap. Reset the trap should pick him up soon. His tracks looked like they went into a stump about 15' away lol. Put all my baits in boxes now since it's snowing.

As I was cleaning the snow out of my cubby I had a pack of wolves start howling just down the ravine from me. Guessing since I was near a stream and that muffles noise they must been within 250-300 yds.

I put 4 snares on the main trail. When I head up next time I'll put in a couple 750s or #9s on scent posts. Always makes you watch your back little more when you know there right there ;)

Hey Teach...

I work with a trapper who lives in Fairbanks.  He's starting to use a piece of #9 wire to hang his bait in front of his marten sets.  He says it keeps him from catching birds.  I don't think he uses boxes either, but I'm not positive about that.  He primarily targets marten.  It's fun talking with him.

Just a tip I learned that I thought you might find helpful.

Great idea! I'll give it a shot. Not a lot of marten in my area but love catching them. Only issue I can see is a magpie could clean my baits out really quick lol.

Few pics from today. Had a heavy freeze and snow. My footholds were iced in. Had a fox tap dance on one of them. Then go down a trail I figured for sure Id pick him up on and one of my snares was knocked over the other had an eaten bunny in it. Added a scent post/bait pile with what was left of the rabbit and reset snares. Next time!
