What caller should I buy?
« on: November 24, 2014, 12:02:18 AM »
So I have been looking at the foxpros and it seems like a good brand to buy. I want to buy one and not wish I would have got a different one later on so which call would you guys recommend that will last me and call in the coyotes effectively and one that I won't regret buying. I have some coyotes lordering around my property and I am thinking I deserve to buy myself a xmas present  :chuckle:

They will all call coyotes!  Stand selection and understanding how to hunt coyotes will make up 90% of what it takes to successfully take coyotes.  I've called them with everything from the cheapest JS Attractor, homemade callers(Walkman cassette play and computer speaker) to higher end remote callers.

How dedicated are you.  Are you going to be hunting coyotes, just a couple outings a year or is this going to be a major part of your hunting.  What can you afford, can you buy a $500 dollar caller that might spend most of the year on the shelf when a $100 caller might do everything you want because you are never going to hunt enough to need or learn to how all the bells and whistles will work for you.  How important is being able to program your own sounds, do you need a remote.  Personally having rechargeable batteries is a pain for me as I hunt for days without ever getting near a place to plug in so mine run on AA's and I keep a couple extra loaded battery holders in my pocket.  I can't read without glasses and they are just a pain to where in the field so a remote that I have to scroll through sound just doesn't work for me.

I've hunted with a pro-guide that used mouth calls most of the time and when he needed a e-caller he broke out a Spitfire, it did everything he needed.

I'm not a big FoxPro fan, most don't fit my hunting style BUT they are the name to have now. I suggest to a newbie to get one of the bottom end FoxPro's with a remote,  If you get bored or frustrated with coyote hunting before you make it through the learning curve you can set it on the shelf and not be out a lot of money or turn it quickly without much of a loss.  Once you've spent sometime out in the field you'll learn what features you need and can use and then spend the money for something that will actually help you put more fur on the boards. My BinL does control work for some farmers in NW WI and used a Western River with a Azden remote conversion for years and a couple of years ago to simplify things went to a FoxPro Spitfire, it works great for him and the farmers are happy.

Things to think about, CS and Reputation, callers are electric and are expected to operate in harsh conditions from AZ desert heat,  WA rainforest to ND Polar Expresses.  Remotes, , how far do you need, how easy is it to operate.  Sound list, how many do you really need and with the factory loaded list work for you or should you order from a place that will custom load a sound list. Things to think about.

I didn't tell you which is the best for you but just gave you some things to think about before your purchase
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

I can't speak for the other e callers but as far as Fox pro goes  I don't think you can beat them for bang for your buck.. A lot will depend on what you allocating for a budget.  AS far as after sale service goes you will not be able to beat FoxPro.
I have  Firestorm and am extremely pleased with it performance and portability and ease of use.  I get extremely good remote operation out to at least 60 yards and could probably go further if I decided or thought it needed to be farther away...
Depending on which Fox Pro caller you get, if you get a FoxPro, will depend on just how many sounds come stock but their list of available sounds is huge.  With mine it came with 50 sounds and I was able to custom pick the sounds at no additional charge but I got it directly from Fox Pro.
Give the guys at Fox Pro a call and talk to them they are extremely helpful 717-248-2507.

I can spend up to around the $500 mark. I have quite a few coyotes around my property I bought a few months ago. I am just for the most part going to use it up there and a couple times a year other places. The area is wooded and I will be hunting with my bow so I just need the remote to work at about 30-40 yards. I gues you can say I wont be intensely hunting coyotes but I do like quality equipment and willing to spend the money on the good stuff just so I'm happy with it. I want a good sound quality and having it light weight doesnt matter much I only have to pack it about 300 yards. I just want to maybe stick some yotes while I go up there to check my cams.

I have the FoxPro Scorpion with remote and I really like it.  It's small enough that I can carry it while hunting other game.

A remarkable experience is one where the pain is forgotten so quickly, the frustrations and struggles are forgotten the minute you’re done.

I can’t wait to do it the next time.

I have a fox pro firestorm (I think that's what it is, will look this weekend an update) and it's awesome, calls in yotes like magic,

There really are no bad fox pro callers IMHO

I dont know about the other models from foxpro but stay away from their least expensive model. I bought one from Cabelas on black friday and the remote never worked right so I exchanged it for another of the same model and it had the same problem. I returned it and ended up getting the Primos turbo dogg which has worked well for me.

I want to hear Rainshadows reccomendation for a caller.  ;)
Coyotes are something I plan on killing, but I also want to use one for cougar and bear while it is still legal.  :twocents:
