Teanaway wolf
« on: December 19, 2014, 08:56:38 AM »
Here's a pic of a wolf in the Teanaway, I had 3 on my camera December the 6th. And we saw three more about 5 miles from here.

Do you have any more pictures?

Quite a bunch in there.   I expect them to cross the freeway soon and make an impact to the south. (I know some have already) but I mean in numbers.   Should be showing up in North Bend as well.   Hancock has some nice breeding areas there

Some of those clearcuts are pretty big.  Seems like the best wetside habitat for a coursing predator if/when they get established here.

My biggest concern is the feeding stations at Joe Watt, Robinson and Oak Creek.
The mountains are calling and I must go

I saw a large wolf in the teanaway awhile back and ran into a WDFW guy a few hours later when I was leaving. I said, "hey dude, I saw a huge wolf back there a few miles and a few hours ago"! He just looked at me and said "that wouldn't surprise me"! And that was it! Kinda crazy!

They knew they were there prior to announcing the lookout pack so I imagine they weren't surprised.

Confirming a pack and suspecting a pack or having a good idea that wolves are in an area are totally different things....they will know about and be able to confirm wolf activity long before they are able to confirm a wolf pack.

Generally if you see a half dozen of them standing together with one or two collars,  you should have a good idea if there is a pack or not, but hey that's just me.   :chuckle:

Yes, that would lead most folks to believe there is a pack, including WDFW staff I'm sure.  When you are dealing with an extremely contentious species that is fraught with litigation you don't have the luxury of applying common sense and reasonable judgement...I believe a pack can not be confirmed until a den site and 2 pups surviving past 31 December is confirmed.  A much higher bar than seeing a group of wolves, even repeatedly seeing a group of wolves.

it's backwards reasoning like that that adds to the problem..
