High hunt or idaho?
« on: December 20, 2014, 04:34:23 PM »
Well here I sit planning out my 2015 season and I am stuck at a crossroads. I have the opportunity to hunt the high hunt next year or go to idaho and flop cash out for a whitetail tag. My only problem is I have enough vacation to do one or the other. I'm looking for input from people who have been on these hunts. Idaho is all on private ground where I would be hunting on my family friends place in the panhandle. Thoughts on these two hunts?

Do you already have the backpacking gear to do the high hunt?

" In today's instant gratification society, more and more pressure revolves around success and the measurement of one's prowess as a hunter by inches on a score chart or field photos produced on social media. Don't fall into the trap. Hunting is-and always will be- about the hunt, the adventure, the views, and time spent with close friends and family. " Ryan Hatfield

If you have the dirt to hunt in Idaho, I would do that.  Go anytime after the 16th of Nov and it will be a fun hunt.
It is foolish and wrong to mourn these men.  Rather, we should thank god that such men lived.  -General George S. Patton

I'd take the Idaho hunt in a flash! I did the high hunt this year and killed a darn nice 3x4 blacktail. It was warm out and I regret shooting him. I had to follow my son around all of the regular season in the cold rain, sleet, snow with no tag in my pocket. It truly sucked! My buck was still in that nasty velvet (peeled it off right away) with a skinny neck and summer coat. I totally missed hunting the blacktail rut.
Life was good again when I went to Montana in November chasing whitetails in the cold.

You'll most likely have much more opportunity in Idaho. The Washington high hunt can be tough to kill a buck.

If I had the time and money, I'd probably do Idaho.  I figure it would be easier to do the high hunt in the future and private land access can disappear suddenly, for various reasons.

Idaho. Much better odds of bringing a deer home.

High hunt for an occasional good buck and the experience.  Idaho for a much higher success rate and the experience.

I used to work in Alaska with a guy who lives in Bonners ferry, and I have seen some of his pics of those panhandle whitetails they are monsters. You also get to hunt them in the rut you and can purchase another tag over the counter for a second whitey!! Do Idaho maybe make a three day weekend of the high hunt and do both.

Two completely different hunts or experiences, from weather, type of action, terrain, type of animal and behavior and so on.   Both are fun.
