Shipping muzzleloaders
« on: January 26, 2015, 08:49:09 PM »
Does anyone know if it's still legal to ship muzzleloaders without going through an FFL? Just want to know if I buy a muzzleloader online will they ship directly to my house. I'm thinking it's still legal but not sure because I-594 is so difficult to decipher.

I checked into it in December and as far as I could tell it is still the same as always has been. don't know for sure. I bought my muzzy before 594 so I didn't have to worry. didn't help much because the one I bought was defective and doesn't work... :(

Local store I was looking at, said ML was no problem (I-594).  I'm not 100% sure I agree with him, at least with "modern" ML

I have bought 1 muzzleloader since 594 came into effect.   It was shipped right to my door.  I also sold 1 muzzleloader.

I talked to Cabelas and another local gun shop & they both said, "For now muzzleloaders are not included in the new law."  I ordered mine from muzzleloaders.com  Excellent service & great price.   :twocents:

According to how we, and other retailers, are interpreting the new law, muzzleloaders are still exempt from the new restrictions. It is always a good idea to check with your local authorities before ordering a muzzleloader or any other weapon online.

Technically speaking..... under 594... "no" you cannot transfer any "firearm" without a background check thru an FFL. "Firearm" being so loosely defined as any device that propels a projectile from an explosive charge.  This would also include some fireworks (Roman candles, ect.), flare guns like you would have on a boat, and Nail guns used for concrete that operate from a .22rf blank.

Thankfully it looks like some common sense is being used as with muzzle loaders.

I don't see any exemption in 594 for modern muzzleloaders. They would be ncluded in the definition of "firearm". Without a clear legal precedence otherwise I would be careful. :twocents:
