What do you do with the coyotes?
« on: September 12, 2007, 08:54:43 PM »
While hunting doves on state land near Brewster opening day I came across a spot that had a couple skulls and some old fur....... a little farther, more. Then there was bones and skulls and furr scattered everywhere and a few piles a couple feet high. There were A LOT of dead coyotes in various stages of decay. I guess theres no chance of some soccer mom stumbling upon this and throwing a fit, but it seems to me there should be something they could be used for. Pelts, hats, tails......... Roche clips. 2 years ago I saw a lot of coyotes in this area, this year I saw none. BUT, a LOT more rabbits and gamebirds were present, so I think it's great. I started thinking {always a bad thing} and realized I have no idea what people do with a dead coyote. Do they have any post-mortum uses?

I sell winter pelts and skulls to my taxidermy friend for extra cash.  The rest of the year I just let em' lie, they aint worth a crap.  You can only boil so many skulls and use so many tails.  Besides, ravens, crows and buzzards gotta eat too, eh?

If I could get away with using the skulls as ornaments I would decorate my truck with them.  8)

+1 what polarbear said.  But I view the value of off season yotes in the increased amount of their prey species.  Ranchers that lose cows to them put an even higher value on them.
Dreams are forever on the mind, realization in the hands.

I grabbed a couple of skulls. Sure was a lot more small game around. And yes, the crows gotta eat. I was just wondering if they were good for anything.

I have wondered about this same sorta thing...I just thought most people took the pelt and that was it. But I did talk to an old relative of mine who used to be friends with an indian in Yakima...the indian had cooked a ton of wild game and made my relative try it. After everything was gone he said the dog was the best thing on the menu. Has anyone else done this?

i keep all hides and then sell them to a local rancher as proof of kill. He pays me money for every coyote shot. havent done it for the last 2 years but use to alot. Man he hates those things but he is a cow farmer and his place is running with them so he appriciates it. I also tan them occasionally, that is if i havent shot them to crap and they actually have some sort of pelt left :chuckle: Lord only knows when i actually will shoot one and what ill be carrieing in my hand when i shoot it. You would be amazed at what goose or duck loads will do to a coyote at close distances :chuckle: :guns:

Actually a lot a taxidermists can't stand them because they smell.  I don't mind them.  I don't keep a lot of them in the freezer.  I can always get them from people.  I don't take them unless they are prime though.

I am actually looking to get atleast 4 big yotes.  I want 2 normal colored ones and 2 of an off/unique colored ones.  I don't want Coy-Dogs!

I also need a 160 - 180lb (live weight) deer for a Life Size.  Blacktail, Mule Deer, or Whitetail it doesn't matter.  Thinking bout mounting the coyotes attempting to take down the deer.

You must have been up Indian Dan Canyon.  George Brady buys coyotes down in Pateros and sells the furs on auction.  He's a great guy and will give you decent money for hides.  I sold ~20 last year and did around $20 per yote.
George takes the carcasses up Indian Dan to let the eagles feast.  Good viewing in winter!

Tell me how many pieces of flair you want me to wear.

If there in good shape I'll skin them out and give them to friends that want them. If not they are left for the brothers to find and become futre targets.
